Hell,Taylor Swift has many more than that just by herself.
Neil Sedaka “breakin up is hard to do”
Bee Gees “how can you mend a broken heart”
Supremes “Where did our love go”
The Drifters - “Please Stay”
There must be 50 ways to leave your lover.
Bob Dylan, “Positively 4th Street”.
“Leaves That Are Green” Simon and Garfinkle.
Reasons. Earth, Wind and Fire
I'll add " Good-Bye to You" by Scandal
and "She #$_&ing Hates Me" by Puddle of Mudd.
And "Reason to Believe" by Tim Hardin
What’ll I Do by Irving Berlin, performed by Linda Ronstadt
Diary by Bread
“ I got the routine, put another nickel in the machine
Feelin’ so bad, wish you’d make the music easy and sad
I could tell you a lot, but you’ve got to be true to your code
Just make it one for my baby and one more for the road”
I’m not sure song lyrics get any better than that And Frank hits it out of the park.
That’s the first song I thought of when I read the thread title. Also Sinead’s “Nothing compares 2U” may have received a lot of air play, but it’s nowhere near as powerful or moving as her song, “Last Day Of Our Acquaintance.”
Hmm. No Johnny Cash “I’ve been flushed from the bathroom of your heart”
Now you can break up 77 times.
And be sure to turn the volume up on your radio.. while you pull into a parking lot ..so that every one knows you have broken up and/or to show the world your excellent taste in music.
See You In September- The Happenings
Nothing against Big Star (I dig #1 Record as much as the next guy), but it’s one of the bands critics throw into lists to make is appear like the critic is sophisticated. This list is just stupid. “Greatest” by whose measure and by what criteria? And what even qualifies as a “breakup song” anyway? Broken, unrequited love, love revenge, or breakup recovery are probably the most common themes in music history, This list just seems like the a GenZ author’s favorite playlist with a few of her parent’s favorites thrown to give the appearance of depth.
Ariana Grande on a list of “greatest” anything? C’mon. And I like Pat Benatar, but including “Love is a Battlefield” seems like it was only chosen because the author wanted to include the song in the article title . “Promises in the Dark” is a far better Pat Benatar breakup song. And this list is notable in it’s lack of entries from the greatest “breakup song” genre, Country Music. A friend of mine still insists “What She’s Doing Now” by Garth Brooks is the saddest country song ever.
And for the record, my favorite breakup songs are “Found Out About You” by Gin Blossoms, “Ordinary World” by Duran Duran (and I generally loathe Duran Duran), and especially “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley.
