Travis Kelce opens up on Harrison Butker as a Chiefs teammate and his speech

If there was any Chiefs teammate who would refer to kicker Harrison Butker as “Harry,” then you knew it was tight end Travis Kelce, right? Kelce let that tidbit be known in the latest episode of the New Heights podcast. Butker was a topic of conversation for Kelce and his brother Jason, the podcast co-host.

“I probably might be the only person that calls him Harry,” Travis Kelce said as his brother laughed. “I’ve known him for eight-plus years and I cherish him as a teammate…He’s treated family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness. And that’s how he treats everyone.”

“When it comes down to his views and what he said at Saint Benedict’s commencement speech, those are his. I can’t say I agree with the majority of it or just about any of it outside of just him loving his family and his kids. And I don’t think that I should judge him by his views, especially his religious views, of how to go about life. That’s just not who I am.”

Kelce said his mother, Donna, and father, Ed, both provided financially for the family and were homemakers, too. “They were unbelievable at being present every single day in my life,” Kelce said.

Jason Kelce shared his thoughts on Butker, too.

“He’s giving a commencement speech at a Catholic university, and, shocker, it ended up being a very religious and Catholic speech. To me, I can listen to somebody talk and take great value in it, like when he’s talking about the importance of family and the importance that a great mother can make, while also acknowledging that not everybody has to be a homemaker if that’s not what they want to do in life.”

If Kelce impregnates or marries Taylor Swift, within a year he will come to understand the relevance of Butker’s speech.

Yes. I would imagine the alternative speech wouldn’t go down well either. Jason Kelce’s wife, Kylie, also went to a Catholic college in PA (ironically, one that is shutting down) and delivered their commencement speech in the past few days also.

Swift’s ambitiousness and career savvy plus feminine grace may be what attracts him to her in the first place. His own mother is an investment banker. Settling down and striking their own balance later is between them and their own preferences/realities. They have every option open to them because both husband and wife have already reached well beyond most average people’s financial potential. They can only get richer. And take as much time to themselves as they want also.

Harrison Butker's mother is a medical physicist with a Master's degree. As such, I am sure she is a lot more intelligent than Taylor Swift.

You seem to be saying that he said women are not intelligent or capable.

I have no idea if she wants to get married, or have children, it’s her business, but as of this coming December, if she did get pregnant it would be considered a geriatric pregnancy. That’s not some kind of judgment, just a medical fact.

Actually the fact Butker’s mother also has accomplished so much outside the home is why a lot of hearers were frustrated by some of his phrasing.

Life doesn’t just begin and end with marriage and children. It should come first (actually second. First priority is God, *then* spouse, then kids) - but not always at the expense of other callings God may have on their life.

Jason’s wife Kylie is a stay-at-home-wife mother and wife. Why hasn’t he kicked her out for the terrible role model she is to his daughters?

Even if Butker was totally wrong, which he wasn’t, doesn’t he have a right to his own beliefs? Is anyone standing up for his right to believe what he chooses?

geriatric pregnancy. That’s not some kind of judgment, just a medical fact.

From a secular standpoint, correct. But remember that even young women can have infertility. Medical fact indeed.

From a faith-based Biblical and Christian standpoint, no. God’s timing is God’s timing. Especially considering the leading roles barren women and elderly mothers play in the lineage of Christ and the unfolding of His redemptive plan. Let God lead you to a spouse, to your calling, on his timeline. And if that’s age 19 great! If biological children are in the cards, great. But it’s up to Him. And He wants to be there for You and bless the world and people around you through you no matter what the circumstance.

As a Catholic, that kind of speech would be more my speed.

Yes, younger women can be infertile, and so can men. An sometimes women can have children fine at quite a late age. But we shouldn’t be lying to women about the reality. What do you mean from a secular standpoint? All of this is secular.

Wish all couples well. Being independently wealthy and each having significant accomplishments in their careers to date diminishes the stress experienced by most young couples. Yet many similarly paired celebrity couples do not succeed. Butker was making a Darwinian point that people ignore at their peril. Women who do not bear children ( as nature intended) or accept the patriarchy ( which almost all mammalian species have evolved to accept and survive) are often quite miserable as they age.

All I know is, my conservative dad raised me to appreciate trailblazers like Amelia Earhart, singers like Pat Benatar…Politicians like Margaret Thatcher, and wanted me to explore all kinds of interests. I don’t think everything has to be “dropped” for the home - and maybe that’s not what Butker meant but that’s how it came off.

That was Kelce’s PR firm/handlers providing him a response.

If Harrison Butker had raped 29 women or committed domestic violence, the Kelces and all these other people wouldn't have said a thing. We know this, because it has happened, and they didn't say anything.

So, I can only conclude that what Harrison Butker said is WORSE than serial rape, domestic violence, killing people in drunk driving accidents, etc.

So, Jason Kelce can't have his three daughters be exposed to the message they could be mothers, but he's not worried about them from people rewarding a rapist?

*I wonder if Taylor Swift wants children?*

Have you seen the looks of his mom? The kids would look like Lyle Lovett.

I know a couple who many many years ago were trying to get pregnant (she was in her 20s, early 30s at the time).

Never happened. Turned out she had unknowingly gone through menopause prematurely and had no hope of conceiving.

I wonder if Taylor Swift wants children? She’s got the money. And the biological clock is ticking loudly.

If Swift wants kids, she'll probably do what all the other wealthy liberal white women (and gay men) do.

Wait until her career has slowed and then, when she's in her 40s, pay a surrogate to carry them.

And they call Republicans the party of "Handmaid's Tale."

Travis has a right to have an opinion even though it may be one that is different than many of those here at FreeRepublic.

I wouldn’t public on a worker or teammate because that would cause a hostlie work environment and rift. Break unit cohesion.

The press want tension and rift because it gets eyeballs to read and watch.

Travis would have best advised not to comment.

“ Spineless POS…”

He could have said the guy can say whatever he wants it makes no difference to me. He’s my teammate that’s all. He was speaking about Catholicism to a Catholic crowd. I don’t even know what he said [likely he doesn’t]. Not my business”

But he is paired with this corporate woman in a convenient pairing. Whatever really that’s all about, this guy can’t say a public word without it getting checked by everyone involved. So it prob just gets generated by the PR team and he can watch looney tunes or go scuba diving or whatever it is he does.
