Depends on both the format and the scope of the communication, and the topic, and the individual comment.
Novels provide more context and more room to tease out fine shades than one-line remarks.
I have been posting here for over 20 years, and have managed to do it without emojis. Occasionally a /sarc tag might have been useful, but even that tends ti ruin the joke. I admit I might be more long-winded than other freepers. I have also managed to avoid the use of emojis in other boards. Their use was deprecated in the original online style guide, though it may have been since revised.
