GROOM, Texas (KVII) — The couple killed in a shootout with law enforcement on I-40 near Groom was transporting more than $3 million worth of cocaine purchased from a Mexican drug cartel.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee said it began investigating Edward Stevenson, 60, and Elizabeth Stevenson, 51, through undercover drug buys.
On Thursday, detectives executed a search warrant at their home in Cookeville, about 90 minutes east of Nashville.
They seized 3/4 of a pound of methamphetamine, fentanyl, multiple firearms, body armor and ammunition.
At the time of the search, detectives received information that the Stevensons were driving a semi-truck back through Texas with illegal drugs and were armed.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the couple said they would die by “suicide by cop” if law enforcement attempted to stop them.

I knew a guy (a friend of a friend) who decided to earn some extra money in retirement by bringing drugs up from Florida to New York.
One night the cops found him shot to death on the side of the road. Someone (probably not the police) found out about his delivery service, and decided to take his cargo for themselves.
This came as quite a shock to everyone who knew him. We didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing.
