What act caused UK and France to declare war? The German invasion of Poland (as part of an agreement with USSR to divide Poland between them). What became of Poland after the war? The part the USSR took, it got to keep. The rest of Poland became a Soviet puppet state for the next half century as did nearly all of Eastern Europe that was liberated by the Red Army.

What nation increased its size after WWII?: the USSR.
Which nations lost their world-wide empires after WWII?: UK and France.

Of the Western allies, only the US emerged stronger after the war.

Also, why did the Soviets decide to ally with Hitler instead of Britain and France in 1939?

Because Britain and France wouldn’t allow the Soviets to have Poland, which was their condition for joining them.

It was personal with Stalin. Lenin blamed him for losing Poland in 1920.
