Open or concealed carry?
American Thinker ^ | 11 May, 2024 | Mike McDaniel

Generally, it’s best to go about one’s business as unobtrusively as possible, relying on situational awareness and solid knowledge of use of force law to avoid ever having to draw or fire one’s handgun.

Among the perennial controversies in the firearm world is whether concealed or open carry is best. Circa 2024, open carry is widely allowed:

State laws regarding open carry fall into several categories: permissive, permissive with restrictions, licensed open carry states, and those in which open carry is prohibited. Permissive states allow non-prohibited citizens to open carry without requiring a permit or license. Most states fall into this category. There are also slight variations in regulations for handguns versus long guns.

Thirty-six states are permissive and allow the open carrying of a handgun without a permit or license. Seven of these states have some restrictions on the open carrying of handguns. North Dakota, for example, allows for open carry of a firearm without a permit, provided the gun is unloaded. The state requires an individual to obtain a license to open carry a loaded weapon.

Nine states require a permit to open carry a handgun, while four states, California, Florida, Illinois, and New York, prohibit it entirely. Open carry is also not permitted in the District of Columbia.

Forty-four states allow open carry of long guns—rifles and shotguns—without a license.

The primary advantage of concealed carry is criminals can’t know who is carrying and have to assume everyone is and act accordingly. This applies largely to red states. Of course, situational awareness plays a role. Anyone appearing to be an easy, unaware target is more likely, armed or unarmed, to be attacked. Obviously, the greater the number of honest people carrying concealed, the greater the potential deterrence.

Think it is more likely the bad guy will wait for another day.

Not if he is a "bad" enough guy. In my state, most convicted armed assault/robbery perps admittedly expect that their victim or a witness will be armed. They are better prepared to deal with them if they knew who that armed person was.

They don’t care here in central Kansas either. We’re an open carry state.

Ah, but do you know when?

Now?

All kidding aside, I have never had someone tell me that they saw that I was carrying. I am with you on that.

Concealed is concealed. No one knows, no permit required. Roger makes a nice 380 for 210 bucks. Smaller than a wallet. Avoid s hole states and cities.

Not carrying now since I’m at home, but when heading out on my job I do. Boss knows it and I’m licensed. My PPD is within easy reach at home though. LOL

I open carried in 22 of 23 states (FL being the only one prohibiting it) last year on an 11,000 mile solo motorcycle trip. Some states such as WI and MI people looked at me like I had 3 heads. Had 3 people, including one LEO, thank me for carrying. My FN five seven got lots of attention from other Open Carry folks.

The communists have won when everything society believes is wrong.

Man, you nailed it.

It's not so much what you don't know that will get you in trouble (or killed), it's what you know that ain't so.

I carry at all times except when sleeping or in the shower. I had a home invasion many years ago (just before FL had a CCW law) where I think the perp followed me home from the grocery store one night due to the car I drove. It almost caught me completely by surprise, but the perp made some noise at my front door a bit before busting the door open. I got a revolver from my nightstand and was returning when he burst into my living room. He only got halfway across my living room when he turned and ran when he saw the gun. If I had not been alerted by the noise I would have been far from a gun and SOL, so now I always carry. I also keep rifles and a shotgun in places at home that I can access quickly.

Right - scatter them around. Fortunately I don’t live in a high crime area (town pop. of 1200) but it’s a tourist town with a state and national park and camp sites so we get folks over from the Seattle area and are lookie-loos; like to come on to people’s property up in the mountains and wander around looking. There are signs regards health concerns should they wander onto our property.

Me too.

I rarely open carry, but only do it for specific reasons {but even then, I have a second gun, concealed.

At home, I'm always within easy reach of some gun, rifle, pistol or shotgun {or all three}.

When driving I always have at least two pistols and several speed loaders very handy and I hope I never have to use any of them, but I would not hesitate for a second if "I feared for my life and I want my lawyer".

Twin brother. I have not published it in FR yet, but had to shoot a guy last summer. Long story (later). Now, some issues with paranoia and some emotional issues. Either leadership in this country starts cracking down on crime or we’re doomed as a nation.

When my home invasion happened and the perp ran, I called the police (Melbourne, FL). They asked if they were still there. I said no. They then said that if I filed a report that my gun would be confiscated due to being at a crime scene. I asked what would I do if he came back. They said “call us, that is why we are here”. I declined to file a report which is probably the desired outcome....lower crime statistics.

Pinkos panties get in a wad when you open carry. It’s kind of like making an in your face statement. Personally, I am happy to see people open carry.
Overall though, because of the aforementioned panties in a wad, concealed is probably best.
