IMHO, the DNC made a tactical mistake having their convention in Chicago.

Illinois is now a very blue state, not at all a battleground state. They won’t sway any swing voters by having their convention there.

The RNC, OTOH, is having theirs in Milwaukee, very much a battleground state. It was a Republican victory in Wisconsin in 2016 that first broke the “Blue Wall” and paved the way for a Trump victory.

Little things add up to big victories.

The gist of the article is (1) the city's Mayor sides with the protestors (no matter what they're protesting) unlike Daley; and (2) they're hoping that the media run interference for them while at the same time are shamelessly limiting media exposure. Altogether, these do not compose a winning formula.

It really comes down not to what the Democrat party wants but what the heavy donors with extensive connections to the professional rioters want. These can't be bought off with money; it takes political concessions to do that. What might be enough is a little scary to contemplate.
