VICTORY!: “ON TO RICHMOND”; Lee’s Defeat and Retreat fully Confirmed (5/10/1864)

For Prayer and Especial Gratitude to God, in View of the Great Victory.

EXECUTIVE MANSION, WASHINGTON, May 9, 1864.

To the Friends of Union and Liberty:

Enough is known of army operations within the last five days to claim our especial gratitude to God. While what remains undone demands our most sincere prayers to and reliance upon Him, (without whom all human effort is vain,) I recommend that all patriots at their homes, in their places of public worship, and wherever they may be, unite in common thanksgiving and prayer to Almighty God. ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

DISPATCHES FROM THE WAR-OFFICE.

FIRST DISPATCH.

The General Result a Success--The Fighting Desperate-The Cool, Determined Courage of the Army--The Death of Gen.Wadsworth--Gen. Sherman Heard From.

WASHINGTON, Monday, May 9 -- 10:45 A.M.

Maj.-Gen. Dix:

We have intelligence this morning by scouts direct from the army, as late as Saturday evening, but no official reports.

The general results may be stated as a success to our arms.

The fighting on Friday was the most desperate known in modern times.

I deeply regret that the country will have to mourn the death of that accomplished soldier, Brig.-Gen. WADSWORTH, who was struck in the forehead by a ball, at the head of his command, while leading them against one of the enemy's strongest positions. His remains are in our hands, in charge of Col. SHARPE.

Gen. WEBB was wounded.

Gen. JONES, of the rebel army, was killed.

The condition of our army is represented to be most admirable. The cool, determined courage, in very instance, proved too much for the desperate fury of the rebels, who have been driven at all points. There has been no straggling.

Could you not have just linked this rather than fill several scrolls of screen. Links make it easy for busy people to ignore things they don’t want to see, rather than have it imposed on them.

Thanks for posting Homer.

It’s interesting to remember these familiar battles as read in the contemporary newspapers. We were less than a year from Appomattox when these events happened and the articles were written. BUT, a lot of American men on both sides were to die in the last months of this tragic war.

Gee, Homer, in my profound gratitude to you for your incredible effort and skill in bringing us these brilliant presentations every single day for four years, I guess it just never occurred to me to find fault with your endeavor, much less to callously upbraid you about it.

“We were less than a year from Appomattox when these events happened and the articles were written. BUT, a lot of American men on both sides were to die in the last months of this tragic war.”

These articles are a daily reminder of why our nation is where it is today.

The victors brought us here.

Are you saying that as a positive thing, or a negative? Wherever we are now, we’ve got some work to do yet.
