WNBA finally allowing charter flights for teams after years of angst

The WNBA is on the cusp of upgrading its travel logistics.

The league is discussing the parameters of all 12 teams flying by charter “as soon as this regular season,” USA Today’s Christine Brennan reported on Tuesday.

“Why now? The explosion of interest in the league, business growth and anticipated future revenue from the next media deal,” Brennan wrote on X.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert quickly confirmed the report, telling reporters Tuesday that the charter flights will be up and running “as soon as we can get the planes in place.”

The WNBA has been in a pickle for several years about teams flying commercial.

Two years ago, the league fined the Liberty $500,000 for breaking the rules and flying private, as players crowed on social media about getting treated well by team ownership.

On one hand, the players become household names in college basketball, where in many cases they fly private.

On the other, the league is entering its 28th season and has traditionally lost money and been subsidized by the NBA.

If any WNBA player believes they are being paid unfairly, they are free to try out for an NBA team that has much, much higher guaranteed salaries. The NBA does not bar women, and in fact a few women have tried out for NBA teams. They just haven’t been good enough to earn a roster spot and get those higher paychecks.

What happens if she is only average in the pros? The drop off in interest will be huge.

Didn’t she just sign a multi-million shoe deal?

Pfft. With bonuses and stock, her compensation will creep up on $500K. But I agree with you. Most of the bus drivers I know have shoe contracts worth at least $30 million. The one she’s working on for only $28 mill is practically slave wages being the face of a business that doesn’t make any money

LOl funny enough, the state subsidizes the public transport here.

I get it. They’re flying private on her work.

Subsidized or not, she deserves more pay.

Then the black and lesbo players will bitch, complaining they deserve the same money that Caitlyn is getting.

One player does not make a league.

Michael Jordan has entered the chat.

No, she's overpaid. There are men in the NBA who are getting paid less in order for her to get paid more than what she and her cohorts bring in for revenue.

If she directly results in more butts in seats, and more people watching, I agree.

Those black and lesbo players are free to guilt businesses into giving them charity that their popularity doesn’t deserve. Good luck (kinda)girls!

I think they would deliberatly go on strike just to deny Caitlyn her payday.

According to this logic,

she should work for minimum wage and the rest should be garnished and sent to the NBA?

This is about relativity and reality.

If the league didn’t exist-this thread doesn’t exist.

The implication is that the endowment that the NBA set up is a given. If she was allowed to sign with the highest bidder that would be under the constraint of expected revenues and endowment funds.

“The explosion of interest in the league,“

Hilarious. MSM tries so hard to keep the life support for dyke ball going.

Same principle as Fast food Franchisees having to buy food ingredients and other supplies from corporate at inflated prices rather than comparison shopping them. TCBY frozen yoghurt went under over it as I’m sure many others did too.

Who's paying for it? The NBA?
