Young Americans Prefer Socialism
Reason ^ | 9-30-2019 | NICK GILLESPIE

What explains the rise in warm feelings toward "socialism," especially among younger Americans? Several things, including a basic misunderstanding of what socialism means, the memory of the 2008 financial crisis and Great Recession, and a near-total lack of appreciation for how rapidly the material conditions of American life have improved. Given Karl Marx's emphasis on historical understanding as a vital pre-condition to political change, that last part is deeply ironic.

Most youngsters are invincibly ignorant.

“I wonder if they know about the over 100 million innocent killed during socialist reigns in less than 100 years.”

That doesn’t seem like reality to them if they’ve even heard of it. It seems that every generation has to learn things the hard way.

Maybe some of them should be told that the results of Socialism are “even worse than Global Warming”!!
Maybe then, the indoctrinated ones will get it.

"Learned WAAAAAY back in high sckrool..that the AMERICAN political pendulum keeps on swinging..maybe slow but it does not stop."

I graduated from high school in 1965. While we were fighting communism overseas, we took our eye off the ball at home, and domestic communism blossomed and has flourished here ever since.

As the saying goes, ship 100 of these yutes to Venezuela and ship 100 yutes to Cuba and do a reality show forcing them to live in these socialist paradises for a minimum of three years and watch the hilarity ensue.

Actually, they prefer what they are being told socialism, without resorting to a research of socialism’s failed and violent history.

Yep, it’s always the weakest and laziest among us who want Socialism because they think they can then live off the industry of others.

Socialism/communism/etc. will *always* have an appeal to those that have nothing (especially while in college). When you’re young in today’s America, dirt broke, it’s difficult to see your way out of it. It seems ‘wrong’ - but you don’t have the foresight of how quickly it can all change due to the opportunity that exists here, unlike many other places. It will get better.

At 19, an immigrant from UK at 16, I was a husband & father, full-time college, almost full-time work, and there were days I couldn’t pay rent or put a meal on the table. Given, I was accountable for that situation - but it was a hard place to be. I had no idea, at that time, what was really possible here for somebody like me. Now, decades later, it’s all changed - but I get why certain concepts are appealing to young people.

Collectivism is a great idea to those who are ignorant and inexperienced.

The pandemic and “free” government money with contact tracers and closed non essential businesses pretty much slammed the door on capitalism.

The reality is that socialism was not for the lazy. Communists demanded work for low pay. They would have hated living in the Soviet Union.
