Not surprised. I was slapped by one of his Floridian counterparts in my classroom because I had the audacity to insist that he needed to learn to read above a second grade level... and this was middle school.
I used to buy into the lie that these brats wanted to be educated.

Besides the shock of being slapped by a student in your classroom, you probably had to fight fhe natural impulse to slap the little thug right back. good. hard and loudly.

When I was in the 6th grade, I became friends with a black kid named Billy. After knowing him for about a month, I noticed that he was making zero progress in Reading.
I said, “Billy, why aren’t you trying harder in Reading class? You know, as you get older we will be competing with an awful lot of kids our age (this was in 1957.)”
As I recall he ignored me and stopped socializing with me.
