I used to buy into the lie that these brats wanted to be educated.

When I was in the 6th grade, I became friends with a black kid named Billy. After knowing him for about a month, I noticed that he was making zero progress in Reading.

I said, “Billy, why aren’t you trying harder in Reading class? You know, as you get older we will be competing with an awful lot of kids our age (this was in 1957.)”

As I recall he ignored me and stopped socializing with me.

Probably had parent(s) who thought all he had to do was show up, and magically he’d become a Rhodes Scholar, instead of a Road Worker.

Or what this kid is going to be, a Highwayman.

Lived in Pompano Bch 1971 and nothing changed. I had kids in my 8th grade JH that were 17-18 years old, couldn’t read and just beat the hell out of anyone getting in their way.

I’m sure the education system is better now with DEI and rubber stamping diplomas?
