IMHO, Rhubarb is a very under-rated vegetable. Or is it a FRUIT? The debate rages! ;)

Lately, I have been serving Rhubarb Sauce to Beau over Vanilla Bean Ice Cream as his Evening Treat. He falls in love with me all over again every Rhubarb Season. Rhubarb Custard Pie. Rhubarb Bread and Muffins, etc. I keep ‘Rhubarb’ in my back pocket for when I need to talk him into another of my hare-brained schemes. ;)

Mom raids my patch, too. She LOVES her some Rhubarb Sauce, so I come by it honestly. It’s not Witchcraft...or, IS IT? LOL!

Your rhubarb post makes me smile, Diana. You are so much fun!

Today I had the pleasure of meeting other women who enjoy gardening. One of my friends invited me to join her and others to learn about prairie wildflowers.

Well, I can report that I learned some new things, met many lovely women with whom I have something in common, and I also had a “visit” with my Mom, who had taken the form of another lady who was roughly Mom’s age. She dressed like my mom would. 91. Very lively and lovely lady. I hope to see her again. It was like I had a visit from my own mother, a true gift.

The end of the visit was so special. One lady invited everyone to stop off at her house, and take a look at her wildflower garden that was in full bloom. All I can say is that it was like I saw a Monet painting in person. It was so beautiful. She had so many different types of wildflowers. She said it’s been a work in progress for 4 years. I so admire her persistence. It was stunning. All the colors, shapes, and heights of the plants.

I love finding out new things and new people in this place we now call home. Today was one of those days. I feel blessed. So I hope each of you have a blessed day that is your next one. You never know when you’ll get one of these surprise days. It reminds me of that saying, “Today is a gift. That’s why they call it THE PRESENT.”

Be blessed my FRiends!

Well I managed to get one rhubarb into the ground yesterday. One survived the winter of the four that I dug up from the old garden. That one was in a 3-gallon pot and was root-bound like crazy. It had been looking really good until the weather started to heat up a week or so back.

I dug a whopper hole and put about a foot of compost in the bottom, knocked most of the soil off the root ball, loosened up the roots, socked it in the ground, made sure the crown was sitting well above grade, filled the hole and finished off the mound with more compost.

I hope this one survives the reset. I probably could have divided it but I decided as stressed as it already was to skip that step and hope for the best. I’ve got four new ones from the nursery that are in gallon pots. Those will be pretty quick to set if it’s not raining after I get done at the salt mine today.

After the little bit of work I’ve done in the new patch it’s become apparent that I need to build a new potting shed. Right now I’m borrowing the hay stall in the barn to store my tools, but that’s just a little too far from the garden gate to be handy, and I have to mind the horses unless I shut them up in the arena.

It’s likely to take me all summer to get things set up so I can be semi-efficient with my movement while working out there but since this will likely be the last garden I develop I don’t mind taking a little time to build it the way I want.
