Long-lost Gustav Klimt painting sells at auction for £26 million

Portrait of Fräulein Lieser', which the Austrian modernist artist started in 1917, sold to an unknown buyer at an auction in Vienna yesterday.

The portrait of a young woman was one of Klimt's last works, as the artist died in early 1918 after suffering from a stroke, meaning the painting has small unfinished areas.

The Jewish Lieser family, who had commissioned the painting, received the artwork unfinished, but soon after were forced to flee Austria amid the rise of Hitler and antisemitism.

Doubtless, Klimt would have done it better.

But I guess that painting is still missing.

I’ve played that music for decades without remembering any image of the musician. Love it!

It's a good thing that auction was held in Vienna, because in New York that painting would only be worth the cost of the canvas and paint, and estimating it for anything more than that is a criminal conspiracy to defraud the auction house.

I've grown to enjoy Klimt, but I wouldn't put my imaginary fortune into his work. My tastes run more to works more like these. That I can imagine putting my Monopoly money on.

In regards to the subject painting, the face is magnificent, but the rest of the picture appears finished by a 3 year old? Look at the womans’ hands, how can you create detail of such a face, but have such mangled hands?

I’m sure there’s no shortage of art snobs out there willing to art-splain the genius of it to me.

Art, like clothing and architecture, goes through fashions. The face is to prove that he could anytime he wanted. As well as to flatter the person paying for the portrait. The rest is to earn him respect among his peers.

I have a Klimt painting on a dinner plate that I found at a thrift store for $1.25. It’s the Church at Cassone. I didn’t even know it was his when I found it. I just liked it. I’ve never done anything with it other than display it.
