Portrait of Fräulein Lieser', which the Austrian modernist artist started in 1917, sold to an unknown buyer at an auction in Vienna yesterday.
The portrait of a young woman was one of Klimt's last works, as the artist died in early 1918 after suffering from a stroke, meaning the painting has small unfinished areas.
The Jewish Lieser family, who had commissioned the painting, received the artwork unfinished, but soon after were forced to flee Austria amid the rise of Hitler and antisemitism.

Interesting. I don’t remember his cityscapes. I mostly remember his portraits.

"In regards to the subject painting, the face is magnificent, but the rest of the picture appears finished by a 3 year old? Look at the womans’ hands, how can you create detail of such a face, but have such mangled hands?" That's what I thought. The face is beautiful, but the hands are ridiculous.

LOVE fine arts. I switched from physics to art history in my senior year at U of Chicago. I wondered about the switch until I found myself in a darkened auditorium looking at gigantic images of art and realized I was crying. Never looked back.

What fun!! I haven't been there but would have loved to have gone.
One of my favorite AIofC memories is our instructor taking us and verbally ripping this huge painting apart. When he finished, he told us to forget everything he'd said and just put the painting back together and enjoy it as a whole.

Winfrey’s recently sold 1912 painting by early 20th century Austrian artist Klimt depicts Adele Bloch-Bauer I, the wife of a rich industrialist from Vienna, according to the MoMA. Nazis stole the painting in 1938 along with other artworks that belonged to the family, and the painting was not returned to the Bloch-Bauer heirs until 2006 following legal battles with the Austrian government.
