Being tailgated by a cop for going the speed limit
April 12, 2024

One of my walking trails is right by the police station in Brookfield, CT. The parking lot for the police station abuts the parking lot for the walking trail (by the Still River which often floods into the trail).

Once in a while after a walk, I get in my car and leave the walking trail to head home and immediately a police vehicle, evidently going on shift, leaves their own parking lot and slides in behind me.

What to do in this situation?

The roads leading back home are in either 25mph or 30mph speed zones. Ridiculously low speed limits, especially when in good weather conditions, you can safely go 40-45mph.

When this happens, I immediately slow to the the posted speed limit. After a while, the cop gets impatient with me and starts to get right on my tail.

I keep waiting to get lit up because I know the cop is running my plate and looking to see if I have any outstanding warrants or such. Having a clean record, the cop is now looking for me to make any mistake at all. Maybe a "swerve" or a sudden braking.

Now I have my hands clenched to the wheel in the 10 and 2 o'clock position, studying my rear view as the cop gets right behind me, obviously irritated by my strict adherence to the posted speed limit.

I know that if I speed up just a little, say to 33mph in a 25, I will perhaps get lit up and pulled over for speeding. So I'm not taking that chance. But I know the cop behind me is super pissed that I'm going out of my way to stick to the speed limit. They want to pull me over so badly.

I hate these situations. Sometimes the cop will light up and just pass me out of sheer exasperation with my slow driving. They have that right. I obviously don't.

Keep going the speed limit. That cop is a power tripping asshole.

I had that happen once. After about eight minutes of being tailgated I pulled off the road and stopped. The cop, having no legitimate reason to stop me, just drove on.

When leaving the trail lot, look over at the police lot to see if any cars are preparing to leave. If one is, let it pull out first before you leave the trail lot.

Cops everywhere do that. Your choices are to go the speed limit until he passes, or to put your head back against the headrest and lock up the brakes, claiming that a small white dog ran out in front of your car.

You’re paranoid. Stay home and lock your doors. And don’t even think of letting your cat outside......

Maybe he’s wondering why you are using your phone while driving.

Illegal in my state.

Must be because you had the flu for Christmas.

Maybe he’s just waiting for you to get out of his way?

I’ve been followed like that numerous times. I just keep it at the speed limit and eventually he goes off in another direction or passes me.

One Friday night long ago, coming home from work at 2AM, driving my 1988 red Camaro, a cop got on my tail. I was going the speed limit or just a few MPH over.

Totally dark, but I knew he was a police car by the confident, or perhaps arrogant way he zoomed up behind me and then stayed right on my bumper, really close.

I just kept on going at the speed limit. This went on for an uncomfortably long time, but it was probably only thirty or forty seconds.

Finally, he just zoomed past me, crossing the double yellow in doing so. He never lit me up. Just took off.

I assume he was trying to goad me into flooring it, so he could pull me over. But I didn’t, ha ha.

If you feel that that Police vehicle is following to closely to you just pull over to the right when its safe to do so and let him go by.

No sense in being worried about a situation like that. We all go through that every now and then.

If you are really uncomfortable get yourself a Vehicle dash came system that covers the front and back of your vehicle just as a self-protection measure.

Actually they don’t.

To me it seems you’re assuming what that cop is thinking and reading too much into this. Just go the speed limit and don’t be snapping photos and posting while driving. That could get you pulled over.

When I am out on the highway, I just consider it an escort. I know what the laws are about the speeds he can run Code 1 and he has the calibrated speedometer and I don’t so mine must be reading fast.
