(Since my wife is Vietnamese), I thought I would post this)
The Vietnamese property tycoon Truong My Lan (female) was sentenced to death on Thursday for her involvement in the country’s biggest financial fraud case, state media outlet Thanh Nien reported.

If one wanted to root out corruption, this is how one would root out corruption.
Funny this would show up as Trump faces charges of real estate fraud. Anyone thinks we get through this without major bloodshed is dreaming.
Seems a tad harsh. I mean, liek 20 years each?......
“ She was sentenced to death for the embezzlement charges and to 20 years in prison for each of the other two accusations.”
Which comes first?
L
Corruption. Was our involvement worth it?
I say this should be handed out with the execution first, followed by the 20 years of imprisonment.
I guess it’s ok to complain about the laws in a country that beat our butts in war.
Vietnam doesn’t play. She’ll be dead in 2024.
The prison can lock up her ashes for 40 years and brag about their low escape rate.
Guess she didn’t bribe the right folks...
I have no doubt this woman was corrupt but in a country such as Viet Nam there are likely hundreds of party/government types who conspired with her and will never see justice.

That’s a good one. You got me laughing!
This points out that our use of the death sentence is far too limited. We should consider making it a capital crime if the victim suffered irreparable injury (physical, emotional or financial) that would significantly diminish the quality of whatever life they have remaining.
For instance, the rape of a child. Or bilking blue-hairded little old ladies out of their life savings.
Because the whole rationale of a capital offense is you have broken one of the most sacrosanct of civilization’s proscriptions. And the only way to be certain you cannot repeat the offense is to put you in a hole in the ground.
Because the rate of recidivism among criminals who have had capital punishment correctly administered is 0.0000000000%.
I agree that capital punishment should be more widely applied, but only if there is not a shadow of doubt that the accused committed the crime.
However... if someone has committed a crime and knows that the death penalty will apply to him, he may well murder any potential witnesses to prevent testimony against him.
