The New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils were quick to choose violence during Wednesday's matchup, engaging in an all-out fight that saw all but two players ejected as soon as the game opened.
Eight players were assessed fighting majors and ejected during the line brawl, which took place right after the puck drop at Madison Square Garden.
The Devils' Curtis Lazar and Rangers' Jimmy Vesey were hit with fighting majors but remained eligible to play as they were ruled to be the "first fight." Every other skater on the ice was ejected because of their "secondary altercations."
The tossed Rangers players included Jacob Trouba, Matt Rempe, K'Andre Miller and Barclay Goodrow. For the Devils, John Marino, Chris Tierney, Kurtis MacDermid and Kevin Bahl were ejected.

Some of the best fights I’ve ever seen were at hockey matches.
I’ve been to two hockey games in my life and no fights broke out in either one.
I want my money back!.....................
The NHL that had only five minutes for fighting was the more polite brand of sport (even back in the 1970s) compared to the US NCAA and elsewhere that banned fighting and is now filled with cheap shot artists and their stickwork.
The fight was planned before the game even started.
I am by no means an expert, but that ‘fight’ looked staged to me.............
That’s what it looked like to me, too..................
If it was a Hollywood movie, I’d give it a thumbs down. It looked faked to me..................
Good times...:)
I just finished watching "The Don Cherry Story-Keep Your Head Up, Kid!" on Amazon Prime, and I think it might be my new favorite hockey movie, eclipsing "Slapshot"!

Rempe is a clown. The owners like him for now because he generates some buzz, but he will do something very stupid, dangerous and embarrassing to the Rangers - and has already shown clear signs.
It ended in a full blown donnybrook, but did it start with just a tilly?
All sports is now just fake entertainment for the masses...............
It was like they all started on cue as soon as the puck hit the ice. Looked fake as hell.............
1. The visiting team announces its starting lineup first. In this case, the Devils started with their fourth line (mostly rugged players who are not highly skilled) and their two most physical defensemen. There's no doubt they were out there to start trouble.
2. The home team announces its starting lineup based on who the visitors put on the ice. In this case, the Rangers had no choice but to start the game with their most skilled players on the bench and put out some rough customers of their own to match up against the trolls the Devils announced as their starters.
3. The result was both predictable and somewhat orchestrated.
It was, to some extent. There is bad blood between the teams, because of some cheap shots taken in previous games, so that's the background.
Rangers send out their goon for the first shift, so the opposing coach, for various reasons, knows he must respond.
think of high school, where the talk all day has been about the two opposing bullies, and their friends, meeting after school....
