A fiery debate has sparked after a cruise denied eight passengers to board the ship after they failed to make the 3 pm cut-off time.
The Norwegian Dawn ship left the tourists on an African island, some without their possessions after the private tour they were on ran late.
The group have now made their way by plane, ferry and car to Senegal, over 2,000 miles from São Tomé and Príncipe, where the Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) ship departed without them last Wednesday.
US couple Jill and Jay Campbell, who were among the abandoned eight cruisers have spent more than $7,000 in travel costs to get to the port in Senegal.
“We truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship follows, they follow those rules too rigidly,” Ms. Campbell told NBC’s the Today Show on Tuesday.

They were still at anchor and small boats were sent with them to the ship and they wouldn’t let them on.
“So they missed the Midnight Buffet?............”
Not just once...but TWICE. 48 hours of travel through seven African country hell holes to catch up with the ship. They’re fault, not the company.
Cruises are playgrounds for serial killers.
“They’ll probably sue (and win) back their travel costs.”
Have you ever tried to deal with a travel claim? That’s what travel insurance is for; to cover those unexpected costs. Try to take a foreign-flagged cruise company to court? Not happening.
“I’ll give them some sympathy when you take private tours you are completely dependent on them getting you back on time.
The ship line should stop doing business with that group. “
The point is the ship wasn’t doing business with that group.
If that was the case with this port, it would not be fair to have all the other passengers on the ship interrupt their vacation for 12 hours because a few stragglers decided to show up for boarding late.
The other 4992 other people on that cruise were able to get back to the ship on time, so “too bad, so sad” KAREN(s), it IS your fault, and you SHOULD be punished for your utter lack of consideration for others.
Those ships have a very strict schedule they have to follow, and your complete self-centredness is the only thing to blame for your inability to respect the needs and duties of others.
To think that your petty desire to not make the sailing on time is worthy of inconveniencing everyone else on the ship is the very height of hubris. Good grief.
You’d probably be the first to complain if the ship was late to a destination too, wouldn’t you?
Back in 1979, we were on a cruise departing from Miami. A charter flight from Chicago carrying passengers for the trip was delayed by a snowstorm. The ship waited about at least 24 hours for these passengers to arrive. Consequences: 1) the ship dropped one port (Puerto Rico) from the itinerary; 2) for at least the first day, the ship went full speed ahead to make up for lost time. The high speed caused a lot of people to get seasick. The wife of the man at the table next to us (he was retired Navy) didn’t appear for the first few days. He said he had never experienced such a rough passage. I think we got a couple of free drinks, but basically the contracts we signed made allowances for such delays.
We’ve only purchased excursions from the ship, but they were run by private companies.
