Vietnam veteran, 68, with dementia died from being body-slammed by Alabama police officer after mistakenly trying to enter home he believed was his own

An elderly dementia patient was paralyzed and died six months later after he was body-slammed into an ER floor by police, in a horrifying moment caught on film.

Military vet Carl Grant, 68, had been taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, in February 2020 after trying to enter a house he wrongly thought was his.

Policeman Vincent Larry pushed him down the stairs of the house's porch and took him to the hospital for gashes on his forehead from the fall.

Then, after he had been treated, Grant, a US Marine Corps Veteran, wanted to leave and refused when Larry advised him not to.

Horrifying surveillance footage showed Larry then throw him to the floor in a 'hip toss' that landed him hard on his back and wrecked the spinal cord in his neck.

The story of how Grant ended up paralyzed began on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, 2020, when Grant drove off from his Conyers, Georgia, home to shop for groceries.

It was to be a quick trip, so he left his cell phone at home and the heater running. Along the way, Grant became disoriented and turned his Kia Optima onto Interstate 20, driving west.

More than two hours later, he was in Birmingham, using his keys in the dark to try to unlock the door to a stranger's house. It was a one-story brick home, just like his.

The owner called 911. Grant assured responding officers that it was his home. They handcuffed Grant, but realized he wasn't a burglar — he truly thought he lived there. One officer recognized signs of dementia.

At the precinct, a sergeant told officers they should have called medics for an evaluation and notified a supervisor. Instead, police told Grant to move along.

I was thinking that too. He must have been the very last unit in.

He also had post-traumatic stress disorder and health issues from Agent Orange exposure during combat in Vietnam.

It sounds like he lied about his service record, perhaps to get disability payments. The US completed its withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973, when the veteran was 17 years old.

> Well the family just won a major lawsuit. <

That’s a start, but only a start. According to the article, the victim was manhandled three times. The last time he was thrown to the ground while in the hospital, and so violently that his head bounced four inches off the floor.

And what of the monster, the cop who killed the old vet? You’d think he’d be in jail. Nope. He’s working as a police officer in a different department.

Anyone who says today’s cops are fine except for a few bad apples won’t find me very sympathetic.

The US completed its withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973, when the veteran was 17 years old.

I misread the article. The veteran died in 2020, not 2024. So he was age 13 when the US left Vietnam.

He was born in 1951, died 2020.

Heartbreaking. A lost old man suffering dementia is heartbreaking even even if a violent cop hadn’t killed him.

If only that cop were a rogue cop and not an ordinary one.

End qualified immunity.

He was 68 when he was assaulted. That was in February of 2020. He died six months later.

The headline writer could have done a better job.

He’s just part of the 90% that give the other 10% a bad name.

“ The Birmingham Police Department’s investigation concluded Officer Larry used excessive force at the hospital. The punishment: a 15-day suspension and retraining.”

I think you went in the wrong direction with your math. Add 4 to 17. He was 21 (roughly) when the US left Vietnam.

So he well could have been in Vietnam for a year or more.

This would never happen in my police force. They should send a few officers up to get some training.

Check your math.

The article states he died at age 69 in 2020 six months after being injured. 2020-69=1951.

It further states he enlisted in 1968 after he turned 18. 1951+18=1968.

When I saw them say 68 and Nam vet I said to myself I’m 68. never had to be part of Nam and that’s not right. Then I saw the incident was 4 years ago in 2020.
So I did math and conclusion followed.

You are correct. Math is hard.

He would have been 21 in 1973. If he was 68 in 2020 then he was born in 1952. 1973-1952=21
