The US completed its withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973, when the veteran was 17 years old.
I misread the article. The veteran died in 2020, not 2024. So he was age 13 when the US left Vietnam.

I think you went in the wrong direction with your math. Add 4 to 17. He was 21 (roughly) when the US left Vietnam.
So he well could have been in Vietnam for a year or more.

The article states he died at age 69 in 2020 six months after being injured. 2020-69=1951.
It further states he enlisted in 1968 after he turned 18. 1951+18=1968.

Your math is way off. My husband was born in 1952 and he was 18 in 1970.
So yes the man was indeed old enough to be a Vietnam Vet.
