The WHO recommended testing it in Africa, because no developed country would allow it. Koprowski was in a race with Salk and Sabin. HIV-1 is a direct descendant of SIV-1, Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, a chimpanzee strain.

Koprowski’s vaccine was oral, and likely the SIV-1 entered human bloodstreams via thousands of teething infants who received the doses (bleeding gums).
