Lawmakers have long shied away from serious discussions about entitlement reform, but the issue appears to be coming back into focus for Republicans who are wary about the growing national debt.
"I definitely have noticed it," veteran GOP strategist Doug Heye told Fox News Digital of the uptick in GOP-led discussions on the issue. "Republicans have talked about this for a long time, not always with specifics. But what tends to happen is, they talk about it, they get attacked, they fall back."
Congress just ended the fiscal year 2024 government-funding fight with President Biden signing a $1.2 trillion spending package into law last week and averting a partial government shutdown. But the ugly battle, which took six additional months after the end of fiscal year 2023, only accounted for the government’s discretionary spending – which makes up just over a quarter of annual federal funds..........

So, talking about Social Security is just dumb.
Unless you are a Republican who wants to lose the election so that Donald Trump can’t solve any problems at all with a Democrat-controlled legislature.
I am going to post it. Joe Biden is accelerating the collapse. While these programs have deep issues, the stealing of the money for Illegals is ENORMOUS problem.
I don’t have an answer to fixing it all, but getting Joe Biden and the Democrats should be priority Number ONE to start.
Cost of illegal immigration - $150 billion per year.
Illegals first to get cut.
Until they all vote en masse against sending endless money to Ukraine, Israel and whichever other country comes begging spare me the entitlement reform. As if a few months before a Presidential is the best time to hash out the details (I’m sure they have no nefarious reasons for bringing it up now).
So, how many people (citizens or not) get benefits but never paid into either SS or Medicare?
Cut off the freeloaders and the problems go away. But the democRATS and RINOs need freeloaders so they can buy votes with other peoples’ money.
Both of these programs are taxpayer funded. Social Security should be self sustaining if managed properly - meaning get the government out of it.
As far as Medicare, same thing, Government involvement and regulations hamstring the programs efficiency.
”A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”
~ Alexander Fraser Tytler
Well, we’ve made it to almost 250 years, but the decline and fall are clearly not far off.
yep, see #27.
Which is precisely why having Republicans campaign on the idea that they will "fix" Social Security is a dumb idea.
The media will convince everyone that you want old people to starve. Congratulations. You just lose your election. And now you cannot "get" Joe Biden and the Democrats. Now they have all the power in the world. Power to give Social Security to illegal immigrants. All because you thought promising to "fix" Social Security was a good thing to talk about.
Republicans are idiots. We’re 7 months from election and they are talking cutting social security and IVF treatments. Clearly they want to lose.
Illegal, unconst. Ponzi schemes are broke from day ONE.
D.C. doesn’t even bother to pull back the curtain on these $200T+ UNFUNDED ‘liabilities’, pretending instead they can “save” ‘em.
Yep, the stupid Republicans will be enticed by democrats to start making pronouncements on Social Security so they can be skewered during the election.
One would think that they could wait until after the election.
Social Security benefits and Medicare are NOT entitlement programs. Recipients pay into the programs out of every paycheck they receive all their working lives for Social Security, and we pay $143 per month now that we are retired for Medicare Advantage (Part B) and it comes directly out of our Social Security benefit. Without Part B, Medicare is basically bare bones coverage.
I don’t have a problem with spending on social programs. I have a problem with graft and corruption and $600 toilet seats and $30,000 desks. Palatial offices for numbskulls. Too many government employees.
What I DO see in the excerpt is some stupid GOP “strategist” who I’ve never even heard of … and no actual quotes from any Republican officials or candidates.

These ‘programs’ are ILLEGAL/UNCONST., yet many (esp. here) start with the “I ‘paid into’ (no, you didn’t)” or “WE can ‘fix’ ‘em (they could be self-sustaining , *IF*...)” *roll eyes*
Leave it to the (R)N(C) to begin any/all ‘talks’ accepting Socialist standing. *facepalm*
Um, could it be that the gubmint has way too many blood sucking employees?
Downsize!

No, “cutting off {X}” doesn’t ‘fix’ *ANY* illega/unconst. Ponzi scheme, such as SS/MediXYZ
As if $200T+ in these ‘unfunded liabilities’ came JUST from the “free-loaders” (def. didn’t HELP)
(R)N(C) concedes the debate before word one is uttered...again
Bankrupt hardly. When does any wellfare and asylum $$$ go bankrupt? Never.

They’ll just run the printing presses at a higher speed. The Fed, being the buyer of last resort, is there to fully enable their relentless spending.
