The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin'
(Excerpt) Read more at youtube.com ...
I remember the early 80s...Billy Joel’s Innocent Man and Michal Jackson’s Thriller.
Mid and late 80’s I might as well have been following Jerry Garcia...
Patsy Cline’s version was the all time #1 played juke box song. Willie’s first “outlaw album” was Shotgun Willie and it is fantastic! Other than Stardust, everything since has been mediocre.
I’ve never understood Eric Clapton. With John Mayall, the Yardbirds, Cream and Blind Faith he was out of this world great. Then he listened to a couple of JJ Cale’s albums and transformed into “Slow Hand”!!! I can’t understand it. A real shame.
Do It Again - Wall of Voodoo.
The above was the straight audio track. If you want to see their (slightly disturbing) video, look here.

Good music started going away about 1985 or so, with some exceptions.
“For my money, you just can’t beat Petula Clark.“
..well, you COULD.. but you’d probably be arrested for assault..
“For What It’s Worth” got a lot of airplay on KHJ in December, 1966. The jocks at KHJ were probably playing a demo, for the song wasn’t released until shortly into the new year.
Which is why I enjoy people such as yourself who are bringing to my attention these people. It's never too late to learn new information. It was just not information I have ever focused upon back in the day. The same was true for my friends also. Now I have more time to explore deeper. The catch up game, is fun and keeps me busy. 🙂👍
I have a friend that I send music to. she's is amazed at what I do know & the diversity of the music I send her that she never thought she would enjoy. Guess I am not alone in my lack of focus on the music scene. But she enjoys her musical expansion as well.
If you don't have the exposure or desire to go that deep, you tend to not go deep. Music was something my parents enjoyed, but it wasn't the artists they enjoyed, that I enjoyed. Nor were they involved in the industry.
Thanks again, and please feel free to make future recommendations & introductions, because there are people whose songs I know, but was unaware they did those songs or never found out who did the songs that most likely have been forgotten. So, exposure is always greatly appreciated & well received. 🙂👍

Since you’re a SoCal local maybe you remember what actually inspired that song (it wasn’t Vietnam like everyone thinks).
It was the teenage “curfew riot” up in Hollywood when the shopowners on Sunset got fed up with all of the teens crowding the sidewalks and driving off their customers. The city responded with a curfew.
My high school pals and I missed the riot but we’d drive up there from Orange County just to wander around doing nothing.
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is gray (and the sky is gray)

There's something happening here
But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
A-telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
I kind of chronologize my life by music and girlfriends
Since I grew up with the advent of rock that part is easy
Plus I’m a curious person and you can google most of it
I occasionally listen to a bio audiobook of someone
I certainly use the internet now to look up things as I stumble across them on my own or people bring to my attention. Provides me with a hobby of sorts now. 🙂
Steely is kind of a league of their own
Respected like Little Feat
Musicianship and song crafting
Becker and Fagen were a great team
Yes. The best non-political thread in a long time I think.
Loads of links and tunes to get through.
Yep I read Rolling Stone from around late 69 on but really in college later
Occasionally I’d grab a Creem or Crawdaddy
We had a great FM underground station from 68 on
WJDX 202.9 the Rock which became WZZQ
they did some educating on bands too
And at night I could get KAAY bleeker street from Little Rock
They ran that show 10pm till like 4am
Progressive fm rock instead of singles and top 40
And delved into things about the bands
Then I learned more from RS I guess
But honestly I’ve learned more delving like now than I ever did then
So much rock history out there
It interests me like politics and girls
The Yardbirds had virtually every great guitarist at some point. It’s astounding how many great musicians were around from from say 1963 to 1973.
Crazy, isn’t it?
We have similar interests, though being married I can't be too overt with the interest in females. Besides I am more than happy with what I got, but perusing the menu doesn't hurt. Though I think the selection on menus back in our days of youth, were much greater & more appealing to the eye, than there seems to be these days. 😋
The rock was more creative as well. Though I find a lot more good music exists then most people state. But like then, it is not promoted, as the other stuff also available that seems to follow a formula.
As a young man, we had Georgetown & George Washington University radio stations, which played excellent music. But in my various states of mind, I usually never garnered names. Besides that reception was sketchy. 😋
