Quadrophenia: It's a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod World
SteynonLine ^ | March 16, 2024 | Rick McGinnis

My dear friend Kathy Shaidle was fond of saying that The Who were "better than that stupid band you like." So it only follows that Quadrophenia, the movie they produced about the British youth subculture where they started, is better than anyone else's youth subculture movie.

So – better than Trainspotting, Suburbia, Singles, American Graffiti, The Wanderers, Reality Bites, Dazed and Confused, This is England, Jubilee, Rude Boy, Northern Soul, Absolute Beginners, 24 Hour Party People, Performance, Backbeat, Control, That'll Be the Day, Velvet Goldmine, Stardust, Young Soul Rebels, Rebel Without a Cause, The Wild One, A Hard Day's Night, Sid and Nancy and Endless Summer?

Perhaps. It's certainly a film that revived the long-dead subculture it was about, though that might have been simply a matter of timing and luck.

It's definitely proof of my maxim that there's no such thing as a "period movie," since every movie, no matter when it's set, is really about the time it was made. And Quadrophenia, a 1979 movie based on a 1973 concept album based on events that happened in 1964 (or 1965), is really about being young in the late '70s and nostalgic about being young around the time you were born.

Which is quite an accomplishment, and I'm sure Pete Townshend wouldn't agree, but hear me out.

It’s better than what they did with Tommy.

“So it only follows”

No, no it doesn’t.

The Who, world’s greatest rock band.
Doesn’t mean they are the world’s greatest movie producers.

Baba O’Riley is my wake up music.

It’s a good movie. Probably not better than most of those in the list. Amazing great album, definitely The Who’s magnum opus. The movie is way better than the Tommy movie though, so give it that.

Quadrophenia was a great album, but a mediocre movie. I’d never put the film up against the greats, but the music still holds up. Tommy, Who’s Next, & Quadrophenia defined my musical g-g-generation. “The Exodus is here, the happy war drawn near....”

I saw Daltry do that in the rain at Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, in the rain, rain from the stage canopy pouring over him, shirtless, belting it out. Top 5 concert ever.

It wasn’t The Who, it was billed as Roger Daltry Sings The Who (say what!?). With Entwhistle, Zak Starkey on drums, and Simon Townsend on guitar. And a chunk of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, perfect for doing a bunch of Quadrophenia material.

And this is relatively newly remastered and worth watching. Right before it all exploded into huge venue shows.

It was a big ask to introduce Jimmy and his tribe without much context, at least for American audiences

I remember being dragged to a midnight showing of Quadrophenia by a friend when I was in college.

I didn't understand a thing about it (including the British rhyming slang) and fell asleep for most of the movie. My friend loved it, though.

My favorite Who album. Entwhistle was at the top of his game.

I don’t know anything about the band, but I have heard about the Mods vs Rockers. And somewhere in the mix were Teddy boys? I dunno. Came here for motorcycles. I assume someone is going to post pics of a Norvin?
