This one probably ran on that “bunker” or No 6 oil too. If it had been operating on liquid natural gas, there would not be a bellowing of black sooty smoke at full throttle.

That bad boy was rollin’ coal.

A little math conversion - the 8.5 million Nm = 6, 269,278 lb-ft of torque. That’s HYUGE!

A strong diesel pickup truck might approach 800-1000 lb-ft, and Ford’s big “Godzilla” 7.3L gasoline V8 (trucks only) produces around 450 lb-ft.

I want one in MY truck too!

I was looking at the Baltimore port on Google to see if any companies I recognize are in the area that is blocked off by the bridge. I am trying to think proactively on which products we use daily that might be impacted soon by the interruption in the supply chain. Major source of imported sugar.
There are large food producers in the area. https://www.glassdoor.com/Explore/top-food-and-beverage-manufacturing-companies-baltimore_II.4,35_IIND200071_IL.46,55_IM63.htm

Looking at the aerial photos of the bridge area, I noticed that there’s a high voltage power line that also crosses the patapsco River adjacent to the Key Bridge. There’s a tower from which the power lines are suspended, and it has a pretty stout looking barrier around it.

Granted, the barriers probably aren’t stout enough to protect against a container ship of this size, but its interesting that Baltimore Gas & Electric had the wherewithal to protect their transmission assets while the Maryland DOT did not.

Yup. These 40K + HP engines are the size of a house. The bores are big enough for a full grown man to stand inside and the pistons are like oil drums stacked up. 90 rpm is pretty much an upper limit for engines this big and at that size the speed is still pretty impressive. The largest props I’m familiar with are 16 feet in dia and that’s a lot of swinging bronze. Our super carriers use 4 of them. I expect props have gotten bigger than that for these big guys.

Ships that run on Bunker C or other heavy oils can’t use piston engines. They will always have a steam generator fired by a boiler. They would typically use some of their own spent steam to warm up the fuel tank enough to get the stuff to flow then vaporized under pressure to get it to burn. You might find crude oil carriers using that system since they can burn the stuff they’re hauling.

You’ll need to find a tranny with a heckuva overdrive to get any speed out of it. But you’ll do great at a tractor pull.

I’m not gonna go around looking for a TRANNY with a “heckuva overdrive” and imagine what kind of Rear-end would match up.

😂

Pretty impressive.

I think my nephew’s Frigate (USS Taylor, FFG-50, now decommissioned and sold to S Korea) was propelled by 2 GE gas turbines, through a single shaft and variable pitch propeller. (I’m cheating and looking it up).

Power was 31,000 KW, and would propel the ship above 29 knots.

The ship also had 2 260 kW azimuth thrusters for maneuvering and docking. I think the boys on the Great Lakes might have called them bow thrusters, though that’s assuming that they were positioned at the bow of the ship.

I got a great tour of the Taylor after she returned from what was her last official voyage around 2015-ish. It was quite a tour, though I didn’t get to see any of the guns firing.

I would have loved to have seen that little R2D2 Phalanx dome thing up there firing off some bursts. I’m not sure that the hierarchy at Mayport would have approved of that, though.

Interesting decor on the ship - reminded me of the timeless 1960-70-80 design of large power substations, of which I’ve visited a few dozen over the years. Same comm equipment setup all rack mounted, probably original equipment in some cases.

But I really wanted to see that Phalanx do its thing.

Can’t use a TRANNY? Maybe I could fix you up with a straight chick that could take your mind off building trucks? Nah, that’s expecting too much?

The Tesla Model S P100D makes 920 ft-lb of torque In lubricious mode. Electric motors have maximum torque at zero RPM — ICE max torque is always around 5,250 RPM.

Not a fan of electric vehicles but it puts your comparisons into perspective.

I LOVE the HUGE engines on these ships.
