Ukraine Missiles Blow Up Russia's Floating 'Command Center': Video

Ukraine destroyed a Russian tanker that Moscow used for surveillance and for deploying first-person-view (FPV) drones in southern Ukraine, according to Kyiv's military.

Ukraine's air force conducted a "successful strike" on the Russian-flagged Mechanik Pogodin on Tuesday, Kyiv's navy said in a statement.

Ukraine said Russia's military was using the vessel as a command center, with the ship serving to launch FPV drones and to carry electronic warfare (EW) equipment. Kyiv said the use of the vessel for surveillance and control made the tanker a legitimate military target.

A brief video posted by Ukraine's armed forces appeared to show the moment of the strike on the tanker. The clip shows a large explosion on one end of the ship, and a dark cloud of smoke billowing up from the vessel. Pieces of debris can be seen crashing into the water surrounding the ship. Newsweek could not independently verify the footage.

"Thanks to the pilots for the successful combat work against the enemy control point!" Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Air Force, said in a statement. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian defense forces have destroyed more than 10,000 pieces of Russian military equipment.

This is evidenced by the data of the Dutch portal Oryx, which documents army losses from photos and videos on the Internet.

Thus, according to the portal, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have destroyed 14,884 pieces of Russian military equipment.

10,463 were destroyed, 677 were damaged, 806 were abandoned, and 2,938 were captured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

As a reminder, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of the morning of 18 March 2024, Russian troops lost 809 tanks, 10,668 artillery systems, and 13,014 armored combat vehicles.

First, thanks for saving my post, seems like somebody didn't like being called a "Pro-Russia propaganda repeater", can you imagine that?
I knew it was a little...ah... "edgy".

Second, I did the math on your three new names and, added to the others, they increase the average time on Free Republic of listed anti-Ukers on this thread from 16 to 18 years, still slightly less than the 20 year average of our pro-Ukers.
So that was my answer to the allegation of Flying Eagle (#77) that somebody had "infiltrated this forum".
The fact is that, on average, posters on both sides have been here for a very long time.

Third, I want to address your comment, "...FReepers who love America and don’t give a rat’s behind about Ukraine or Russia.".
Here are the problems I see with your claim:

1. You guys don't really love America -- not the actual America of our Founding Fathers and historical progress of nearly 250 years.
   That America is basically a mystery to you, and some of you are still stuck back in the debates of 1788 over approvals of a certain important document.
   Instead, you actually hate America and most Americans -- you hate our government, our foreign policies of over at least 100 years, you hate our "elites", our Democrats, most Independents and even a large chunk of conservatives & Republicans.
   That's over 80% of all Americans you hate, meaning that, by yourselves, you guys elect nobody, nowhere, no time -- give that some thought.

   So, spare us the nonsense about how you "love America".
   You don't.

2. Your claims to "love America" are focused almost exclusively toward using Ukraine aid to address our huge annual deficits and enormous accumulated national debt.
   But Ukraine is a mere drop in the bucket compared to annual defense spending and government deficits.
   It's microscopic compared to the national debt.
   If you were truly concerned about our debts from a conservative perspective, there are a long list of other insane Democrat vote-buying schemes you'd want to eliminate first.

3. You claim to be, in effect, "neutral" and don't care about either Russia or Ukraine.
   We know that's not true because your verbal attacks are focused almost exclusively on Ukraine and Ukraine's supporters here.
   Sure, we see an occasional handwaving of, "Russia does it too", but you seem literally incapable of distinguishing between right and wrong, or good and evil, in Russia's unprovoked and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine.
   Somehow, in your minds Russia and Ukraine are morally equivalent, and that can only happen if you've been guzzling down the pro-Russian propaganda KoolAid.

4. Because Russia is almost guaranteed to defeat Ukraine permanently without substantial Western aid to Ukraine, a claim of "neutrality" is, in reality, almost 100% pro-Russia and anti-Ukraine.
   For just one historical analogy, in September 1939, if you claimed to be "neutral", then you were, in effect, both pro-Nazi and pro-Communist as Hitler and Stalin together carved up and murdered the hapless Poles.

   So "neutrality" in a grossly uneven fight is a sham and a pose which blatantly favors the stronger powers.

5. Finally, it's worthing noticing that those who support Ukraine here are open and above board about what we want and why, while those who oppose Ukraine -- once we set aside their fact-free accusations and insults -- are entirely opaque as to real reasons for their feelings and behavior.

At least that's my experience of it, YRMV
