I remember my ROTC class was ranked by GPA, the #1 was a female PhysED major with a 4.0, I was #2 with a 3.8 in Math, and the next was a male Chemistry Major. Seems unfair to us guys that we STEM majors were losing out to a jock, did not matter it was a she.
This study also gets into female race. What about male race? IMHO black males were also missing from STEM.

Ironically in high schools girls far outperform boys in general in math and science.
I think girls just don’t think a “job” in a STEM field sounds very appealing to them. There are a lot more “geeky” guys than girls and that is who is most drawn to STEM as a career.

Real women are still in for the STEM program. They probably got wanna be women and non binary unaware of what they are mixed up in the polling data.

I’ve worked in the STEM field all of my adult life. Females are very much the minority to this day. And lookers? fuggedaboutit. The hotties are always over in marketing or communications.

Seems to be just as many female nurses as ever in stem jobs

Come to think of it. with all of the Hallmark Christmas movies my wife watches, I don't remember any of the heroines being in a STEM occupation.
Although an engineering degree would probably be easy for anybody who can figure out how to get 3 extra winter coats and 15 different outfits into one carry-on suitcase. Including shoes.

In general, STEM is hard.
