A medication for high cholesterol can drastically cut "forever chemicals" (PFAS)—associated with an increased risk of cancer and banned in Europe—in the blood, researchers said.
But the drug was not suitable for widespread and prolonged use because of its side effects.
A clinical trial with cholestyramine led to a reduction 20 times greater than the normal result without intervention.
"The effect of treatment was actually a decrease in the plasma of 63 percent," said Lindhardt.
Researchers say the results are promising for treating people who have been exposed to high doses of the "forever chemicals", so called because they tend to accumulate and stay in the body.
But Lindhart added of the new treatment: "I don't think you should take this medication permanently because there are side effects."
PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), refer to a family of some 4,000 chemical compounds.
Some residents of the town of Korsor in central Denmark, were exposed to high levels of one of them; perfluoroctane sulfonic acid (PFOS).
It was present in a foam used to extinguish fires at a local firefighting training facility.
This community, where the measured PFOS levels are well above normal levels, was chosen for the clinical trial on 45 residents.

PFAS wind up in bile, and bile is excreted by the gall bladder to breakdown fats. This drug lowers cholesterol because a lot of cholesterol is needed to make the bile. The drug causes bile to leave the body the next time you go to the bathroom.
Normally, the body is extremely efficient at “saving” bile, with as much as 95% of bile being reabsorbed for reuse, as I recall from my reading. A drug like cholestyramine stops this cycle. So the LDL and PFAS go into the toilet.
However, there is a perfectly safe bile sequestrant that people are heavily encouraged to use, to get rid of cholesterol, as well. It is called “psyllium fiber.” Psyllium also does not cause our liver to have problems making more bile from cholesterol, like cholestyramine appears to do, as serum bile acids stay elevated.
I will post the study that compares these two bile sequestrants in humans.

The study found that cholestyramine further hurt colitis patients, while psyllium helped minimize issues.
Ping of interest.
Is mRNA a forever chemical?
Asking for [I AM SCIENCE] Fauxcy.
Bump. Thanks for the psyllium fiber info.
The only answer is for the Woke people to drain out all their blood.
To best address cholesterol with psyllium, you need to take it about 20 minutes before eating fats (or a meal).
My ‘controlled diabetic’ husband drank Metamucil 3 times a day since he was diagnosed in 2000. People don’t know that it works. Some doctors act like they never heard about that.
It worked for him. You get a glass of water and fiber at the same time.
A question for someone more knowledgeable: If these compounds never break down, how do they cause harm to living things? They are only ingested in tiny amounts..
Ping
Thanks for posting!
I’ve spent a lifetime collecting forever chemicals.
Seems a shame to get rid of them now.
I’m not more knowledgeable, but worrying about PFAS is probably worse for you than PFAS themselves.
You earned them. :)
Thank you.
You’re welcome!
Indeed! Thank you.
To lower his cholesterol?
psyllium fiber
