Filming has secretly started on a new series of Downton Abbey.
The period drama – the last episode of which was aired a little over eight years ago – is making a surprise comeback in a seventh series.
Bosses hoped to be able to bring back some of the big name actors such as Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern and Joanne Froggatt who appeared in the previous six seasons and two movie spin-offs.
While it is not known if all of them have signed up, chiefs are said to be 'thrilled' with their casting.
The return of the show, which was filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire and which covered the many societal changes and world events between 1912 and 1928, is expected to be on screen at the end of the year.

“They need to do a prequel.”
I heartily agree! Though it is not possible to de-age or rejuvenate Maggy Smith, her exploits in the 1860’s in Russia and the Continent would make fascinating historical drama. Perhaps a new actress could fit the role. She would have to be as saucy and sarcastic as Violet, though.
The series had great production aspects. Scenery, photography, a better bygone age (that only a miniscule few ever experienced, but why niggle over details).
The same creator tried to translate the general atmosphere to NYC with The Gilded Age, Astors and Vanderbilts et al., which is über-woke crap.
Expect more of the latter for the re-boot of Downton Abbey.
They just can’t help themselves.
The guy that played Lord Grantham is in a series about archaeologists called “The Bonekickers” Very woke with some mystical stuff thrown in.
YES!!!
TV worth watching!
IF they put in American English subtitles!
“IF they put in American English subtitles!”
That’s why you have to watch it twice. The first time gets you acclimated to the accent, and the second time around you actually get it
Might I recommend Doc Martin? Another gem.
Saw the last movie. My thinking was the show is out of steam.
The article talk is all about the cast, but the real star, the source of the greatness, is Julian Fellowes. He crafted a fantastic story.
He has written and produced other stuff and it is all fantastic
Making assumptions about people and things you neither know, nor understand, only makes you look foolish.
There already was at least one homosexual character in that series and NO Aristo, in the 1930s ( nor for many decades afterwards ), in the UK, would/did marry a black person!
Downton Abbey is NOT as good/nor well done as GOSFORD PARK, which, whilst okay to good, is a pale copy of the FANTASTIC UPSTAIRS/DOWNSTAIRS, and Downton Abbey is the worst of the lot.
Sadly, Doc Martin ( yes, a GREAT Brit series! ) has just ended. :-(
