Our Crazy Cousins North Of The Border

If there ever were a sign that Canada has gone cuckoo, it has to be a bill introduced in Parliament that would censor speech about fossil fuel. No, we’re not joking, though we hope the bill’s author is. We fear, however, he isn’t.

One Charlie Angus, a New Democratic Party member of the House of Commons from Timmins–James Bay in Ontario, has brought before that chamber Bill C-372. It clearly states that “it is prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel, a fossil fuel-related brand element or the production of a fossil fuel except as authorized by the provisions of this Act or of the regulations.”

Under the legislation, it is further “prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel or the production of a fossil fuel … in a manner that states or suggests that a fossil fuel or the practices of a producer or of the fossil fuel industry would lead to positive outcomes in relation to the environment, the health of Canadians, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples or the Canadian or global economy; or … by using terms, expressions, logos, symbols or illustrations that are prohibited by the regulations.”

Does “nuts” adequately describe the thinking behind this bill? It is most certainly outrageous.

If we read the Canadian version of English correctly, merely pointing out the indisputable fact that civilization would break down without fossil fuels would be a lawbreaking offense. So would arguing that vehicles with internal combustion engines are better for the environment than trendy electric vehicles, or pointing out that natural gas is a cheaper, more reliable source of energy than wind and solar.

The punishment depends on which provisions are violated, with the most punitive corrective measures being $1.5 million fines and two-year prison terms.

Not all Canadians are crazy, of course. Yet the effete, shallow yet odious Justin Trudeau is in his third term as prime minister, so there is an abundance of poor thinking among the electorate.

To be fair, U.S. politics are not immune to madness. The current bumfuzzle administration tried to establish a ministry of truth that it called a Disinformation Governance Board to trample free speech and control the narrative through a Goebbels-esque swarm of lies. There is clearly a campaign against open expression in the industrialized West.

When and where does it stop? We know the answer: When voters in developed nations stop handing legislative majorities and executive offices to leftist politicians. It’s painfully clear that American Democrats and their equivalents in other countries are intent on blocking speech that they don’t approve of.

Never underestimate the impact of Santa Claus legislation on an electorate.

The Canadians in my extended family are in many ways the kind of rugged self-reliant farmer types us Americans would be proud of having in our families. Yet, decades of "free" healthcare and such has made them loyally vote for more government control over their lives with no talking them out of it. They think we're lying when we tell them we don't wait for a year and a half for hip replacements and such.

If the United States ever breaks up into two countries and if there is a conservative nation in the middle from Montana to Texas, Alberta should be invited to join. Good people there, and with freedom to build pipelines, Alberta oil and natural gas could be transported to Houston or New Orleans for export. Texas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota, joined by Alberta, would be an energy powerhouse to rival the Middle East.

Hey! Who gave the authors of the bill permission to print an ‘anti-fossil fuel discussion’ in the first place? If speech isn’t free any more, then let them live by their own standards and have th3mselves arrested for speaking their minds

Th3 “free health care” nearly killed my uncle twice- he left because of it, as a matter of self preservation.

They think we're lying when we tell them we don't wait for a year and a half for hip replacements and such.

Our friend had a partial blockage in his heart... where we live they would correct this by installing stent almost immediately using angioplasty. But because they lived in England... he was put on a waiting list. They had plenty of money put away... my wife suggested that they take a “medical holiday” to Thailand or one of the other countries where this is a fairly inexpensive procedure.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/189973/cost-of-an-angioplasty-in-various-countries/

Instead after two years of living miserably and getting progressively worse... he died. This is the same road we are likely heading down but Canada, England and other Common Wealth countries are ahead of us.

“Not all Canadians are crazy, of course. Yet the effete, shallow yet odious Justin Trudeau is in his third term as prime minister, so there is an abundance of poor thinking among the electorate.”

Once again, the Canadian Prime Minister is not voted in by the electorate (except in his district), he is selected by his party colleagues in Parliament. It’s like blaming the people of West Texas for Nancy Pelosi.

Nations that were once under the British crown missed a developmental step, to guarantee essential freedoms similar to the Bill of Rights. Canadia, Australia, NZ.

Turns out that’s important.

I got 2 stents 3 years ago in November just before the Covid
insanity hit. I was driving and walking the day after the procedure.

My wife had a delay in getting a hip replaced and her recovery has been slow, tedious and often painful.

Re your reality quote above: “This is the same road we are likely heading down but Canada, England and other Common Wealth countries are ahead of us.”

Add NZ and USA to your group, you have the now infamous 5 Eyes group focusing on taking away our rights and often holding back need medical treatment like a Stent.

Hmmm, at least we can still talk about oil and gas, since the hydrocarbons we extract from the earth aren’t ‘fossil’ anything, but produced deep in the mantle. And there are loads of hydrocarbons on satellites of the outer planets in our solar system. We can talk about them, too, because there’s nothing ‘fossil’ about them, either.

Thus, I wonder exactly what it is we can’t talk about, since there’s no such thing as ‘fossil’ fuels? Will we be declared raycist, which is defined as anyone disagreeing with a commie?
