Anatomically speaking, we haven’t evolved one iota since the Stone Ages, which means Fred and Barney were every bit as intelligent as we are (at least those of us who work in rock quarries), so’s you’d expect their cultures to be every bit as evolved and intricate.
They just didn’t spend all their waking hours staring at their stone phones.

Geographical distribution and duration of the culture gives some idea of population sizes. It'll be interesting if they wind up getting DNA out of any remains they find.
