Are we worse at Moon landings than 50 years ago?
BBC ^

Posted on 02/04/2024 3:29:14 PM PST by nickcarraway

Japan's Moon lander ended up on its nose when it made its historic touchdown on the lunar surface. A US lunar lander has "no chance" of making a soft landing on the Moon due to a fuel leak.

We've set foot on the Moon multiple times. So why all the recent mission failures?

Yes, because most of these young gun engineers don’t know how to use a slide rule.

We’re in an era where it costs less to send a rover to the moon than it takes to buy an Airbus 320. Or buy 5% of a destroyer for that matter.

Okay, sure. But what's the point?

Much of what passes for national "space programs" today is just idiotic political ego-stroking. A country like India seeks to land on the moon for the same reason a country like Argentina builds an aircraft. At the outbreak of the Falklands war, Argentina sent its one aircraft carrier to Chile for safe keeping.

Every dollar spent today on space "exploration" is money down a pointless rathole.

I never doubted the moon landings before but since realizing the government lies about everything, then anything is possible.

Engineers used to be more competent across a range of disciplines which are now specialties, and more compartmented.

Also, had less bureaucratic oversight and more actual testing at all levels.

Now cost and schedule trump adequate testing.

And, my favorite, Uploading the proper software AFTER LAUNCH.

I think we’re worse at nearly everything than 50 years ago.

We aren’t any worse or any better because we have never done it before.

Heh....just kidding, don’t blow a gasket.

JPL did a pretty good job with Ingenuity on Mars. Target was 5 flights and they completed 72.

Everyone knows it was strong black women who got us to the moon! They even made a movie about it.

I looked it up. Hidden Figures is a true story. I have no objections with that movie. In fact, Hollywood should make more original movies like that.

Instead of making stupid remakes and becoming woke and insulting the audience which is what is happening nowadays.

I totally disagree. Hidden Figures is blatant propaganda.

When NASA dedicated a building to one of the ladies she laughed at them and truthfully acknowledged her contribution was very minor.

Btw I congratulate her on her honesty—in these times that is the true accomplishment.

“One reason is because Modern engineers don’t learn anything useful in school. They don’t learn how to think critically. Just look at Boeing.”

You nailed it! I attended the University of Arizona in the mid 70’s and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Almost all of the professors I had as instructors were WW2 veterans who went into industry after the war and retired. My advisor was a retired USNR O-6 who retired from General Motors as chief engineer for Allison Division. Another professor I had was a WW2 veteran who retired from Boeing as one of the lead engineers on the 727. Pretty typical of the teachers I had. I was really blessed learning from them all.

It's a movie, not a documentary. So have to take it all in with a grain of salt.

These things are happening because far fewer people know how to use a slide rule.

That’s hardly proof. Some people are very modest as hard as that is to believe.

“When did the UK land on the moon?”

In 1999. There’s a documentary about it.
