Dick move. He could have called or told me in person. I wasn’t the only one to show up.

Once an employer goes down the path of not hiring the best applicant but rather primarily focusing on meeting DEI goals what did they expect? I have no sympathy. Let them burn.

It depends. What was the agreement when the person was hired?

How is the person paid (hourly? salary?)

Is there a weekly schedule? Was/is the schedule adhered to?

When I was in the Army, it annoyed me to NO END that those that smoked (almost everyone did back then) got a good 10-15 minute ‘break’ pretty much on the hour to go have a smoke.

When they left to go smoke, I’d pull out a book and read.

When my Sergeant confronted me on it, I told him I didn’t smoke and that I would take my 10-15 minute BREAK PER HOUR to read, instead.

Amazingly, he didn’t put me on KP for a month, though he did tell me it would be easier for him if I just started smoking, LOL!

I worked for a real ass once. He called me into his office one day to announce that he was unilaterally changing my agreed-upon 9 am start time to 8:30, which he knew would be a bit challenging for me due to my commute. He then “helpfully” suggested that if it was too hard for me to make it in by 8:30, there was an alternative - I could come in at 8:00.

I started working on my exit that day and was gone in a matter of weeks. I still regret that I did not quit on the spot.

I’m of the older generation who is horrified by the Gen Z work ethic. But there probably is more utility and productivity by the kid going to a workout class than going to yet another useless meeting.

As a military person going to boot camp in 1977, the idea of missing that first “workout class” is very personal to me. My drill sergeants were very cooperative with me in making sure I had that “me” time. (SARCCCCCC)

I know we’re being invited to jump all over the Gen Z employee here.

Meh. Sorry. I just have no sympathy for companies. If they’re not paying her a great salary or giving her a great pathway to promotion, I can fully understand her refusing. I used to be salaried and I consciously chose to become a contractor paid hourly. Companies can’t abuse my time anymore. They get a set amount of time and if they want to demand more they have to pay more. Gone are the days when I was salaried and was working 75-80 hours a week....and yes, I did that.

If they want more from her, pay her. Otherwise they have to decide if they want to keep her around and she gets to decide if she wants to stay. I give companies fair work for the time they contracted for. They can demand more but they’re not going to get that unless they pay up.

Perhaps “they” may have a case for getting paid in the singular while identifying in the plural.

What is this person doing scheduling “Workout sessions” at 8am for in the first place.

The workday starts at 8am. That is why it is normally called an “8 to 5 job”.

Unless I’m missing something?

In all my personnel training, conducted by labor attorneys employed by our insurance carrier, that we were informed that all new job descriptions had to cleary state the hours of work. Apparently Gen Z “workers” assume they can make their own hours.
