It looks like this was a good topic to post on. I included ConservativeMind on this reply to see if he'll shoot this out to his "The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List folks for further dissemination.

I wonder though, and it's a question that came to mind late last night, but how many hours a day do CPAP users use their machines? I use mine mostly during the evening hours when I go to bed, but I'll also use it if I lay down during the day as well. I'll sometimes use it 10-12 hours during a 24 hour span of time.

Thoughts?

As I noted earlier, I finally got a replacement for my old ResMed unit. Though it was beyond its estimated useful life it still works, which got me thinking I should set it up downstairs for use when I take my afternoon nap. The new ResMed is upstairs in the bedroom. When I first started on CPAP about 10 years ago, I admit it took some getting used to with the nose pillows and headset. But, now I’m hooked on the device. My dad had severe sleep apnea and died in his sleep, which made me determined to use the device. Now I see it as my friend and I use it every night throughout the night.

Almost the same for me. Up to 10 hours in a given 24 hour period.
When I started using it years ago it was a game changer as far as how rested I felt after a sleep cycle.
I figure I should have been using one for at least 20 years before I started.

It’s too bad Philips won’t be selling them in the US anymore. I imagine whatever stock they have will either be sold until gone or reallocated to different countries. The lawsuit and recall really hurt them and like I said, it wasn’t even their fault. The machines were being cleaned in a way they never intended. I think I’d try to go after those cleaning machine makers if they haven’t already gone to ground. I never see them advertised anymore.

My husband uses his all night, and any time he lies down, but he’s on oxygen almost all the time.

Same here but early this morning around 4am I woke up with my tube filled with condensation and was spitting water everywhere when I removed the nose mask. First time its done that.

I haven’t used it for any of my naps, which seemed to be more often as the years go by:) I average about 6 - 8 hours/night. One thing I don’t like is the new Resmed machine I was issued which has dreaded WIFI and APRIA uses that data for MEDICARE compliance. More big brother watching.

I also will use my CPAP if I lay down for a nap during the day. I often nap sitting up, though, so I don’t need it then. So I am using it 6-8 hours a day. And my new machine doesn’t connect to wi-fi so I’m not broadcasting my sleep patterns - nobody’s business anyway.

Mine goes on at bed time. Sometimes that works out and I sleep well all night (midnight to 7 AM). Lately, it goes poorly and I pull it off after a couple hours of flopping around. In recent weeks I've started my workday with as little a 1 hour of decent sleep between midnight and 7 AM. Last Friday I just ditched the CPAP entirely. 7 hours of good sleep. No alarms. SPO2% of 96% on my Charge 5. I really get mixed results with the CPAP machine. On the nights I ditch it, I'm recording 4 events per hour. On the nights it works well, the hourly average can be under 0.5 events per hour.

I have thought about this too. I only have blocked airways when I fall into a sleep state, and if I don’t have the AVAP system, (assured volumne) I suppose I will just wake up again. But all this equipment is a pain to have available, so it only makes sense to use it at night.

At first I was provided with O2 and a breathing tube (cannula) but that too is not comfortable and I don’t seem to benefit from it when watching TV or whatever.

This is because by having good O2 at night I manage to perform in the daytime pretty well, Even can play a round of golf, although the effort does strain the muscles.

Take care.
