View To a kill: 'My view from witness gallery of world's first nitrogen suffocation that will haunt me forever'
Daily Mail UK ^ | Jan 26 | By LEE HEDGEPETH IN ATMORE, ALABAMA

Twenty-two minutes.

That's how long it might take you to run a few miles. To prepare a meal. To call a loved one. It's also how long it took Kenneth Eugene Smith, 58, to die.

As he convulsed and writhed in the tight black straps of his gurney, his wife Deanna began to sob. The slogan on her shirt - 'Never Alone' - reflected in the low light off the thick, dull glass viewing window that separated her in the witness room from her husband in the execution chamber.

In Alabama's William C. Holman prison on Thursday night, soon after 8pm local time, Smith became the first person in history to be put to death via nitrogen hypoxia. Smith had been on death row since 1996 - convicted for a 1988 murder-for-hire, where he was paid just $1,000 to kill Elizabeth Sennett, the wife of a preacher who ordered the hit. This was not the first time the state had tried to kill Smith.

It should be noted that the miscreant executed is the one selecting this option over electrocution.

This!

Whatever one thinks of various execution methods, it's hard to have a more humane option than letting the convicted choose the method. Especially if the pro-abortion/anti-death-penalty Dims limit other, possibly more humane, options.

The above is posted for just a bit of balance to the Daily Mail UK article...

The whole think is a lie. He most certainly did not struggle and convulse for 22 minutes. he held his breath for two, died, and the state kept the nitrogen flowing another 15 or 20 min. Then checked his carcass to be sure there were no signs of life.

Claiming he struggled for 22 min is a propaganda lie, put out against a wide body of industrial accident experience with nitrogen gas.

This article is sentimental propaganda. They HATE nitrogen execution because nitrogen cannot be embargoed. It’s easy to obtain.

They weep and wax sentimental about this filthy killer, and are utterly indifferent to a late term abortion, or a painful mutilating sex change to a kid.

If it was a J6 inmate they would have cheered.

Exactly. This is pure propaganda. He held his breath for 2 minutes or less, resulting in one deep breath, and almost instant unconsciousness.

I care not a wit whether he suffered. I’m tired of people arguing for the Death Penalty as a deterrent. It is NOT a deterrent, nor should it be. It should straight up be used to remove pieces of garbage off the face of the Earth who deserve it…and this guy deserved it. The only problem is it takes too long. One appeal and you’re done - no more years sitting in a cell. Give the prisoner a choice: Hanging, firing squad or the hot seat. No more BS about being humane, let them worry about their final minutes.

Haunt him forever? He should have seen the first “Old Sparky” execution! One reporter runs from the room as sparks and smoke fly from the body!

Wish I could find that illustration!

I thought I read somewhere that families of both the prisoner and the woman he killed were not in attendance.

Reprised here from a previous thread.

The more they suffer, the better.

Eye for an eye would be better.

Since we can’t do that, lets go back to hanging and firing squads.

The shooters don’t miss and the rope doesn’t break.

Hanging is fool proof. It has a built in back up plan. If the neck doesn’t break, you will still strangle to death.

BRING BACK PUBLIC HANGINGS! It WOULD BE a great “deterrent” to future capital criminals.

Fight crime by BUILDING MORE PRISONS!

In MY prisons, inmates would be held in their individual cells 24/7/365.

ZERO chance of inmate to inmate crime.
ZERO chance of prison riots.
ZERO chance of of inmates attacking guards.
ZERO chance of escape.
Less guards/staff required.
Opportunities for local employment (making license plates etc.)

ELIMINATE PAROLE!

Do the crime, do the time. Sentenced to 10 years, DO TEN YEARS!

If we can’t just remove these shreds of human debris from the earth, then at least remove them from society for the actual time they are sentenced for.

I suspect these European media outlets had to hurry a media report out under duress. They all had their propaganda reports ready about a black man being executed in Alabama, but at the last minute someone told them the guy was white. So instead of their insufferable pontificating about how the death penalty is racist, they had to cobble together a laughable report that the execution technique is inhumane because the guy allegedly held his breath and thrashed around for two weeks. :-P

He fought it and did it all for theatrics.

Like we could trust a murderer to tell the truth?

Who in Alabama thought that smothering the condemned was a good idea?

Nobody was holding a pillow over his face. It was not *smothering*.
