I’m thinking this is some new parenting hippy trend among young women. Like vegan kids, or breast feeding till 5 or 6 years old. I bet at the root of this is some new Dr Spock kind of thing.

Toddlers don’t go to kindergarten.

I thought most kids were potty trained by age 2.

Republican senator Douglas R. Welton has proposed the HB331 bill which states that schools can only admit children on the condition that they have been bathroom trained.

Without reading all the details, I can't disagree with this statement. Frankly I'm surprised that there needs to be a bill about it!

Why would a parent let their child get that age without knowing how to use a bathroom? That is a lot of extra work on the parent. I know there are some medical issues that could cause this, but those are rare.

I know a High School Special Ed teacher who vented about the family of a particular student. During the school year she would have him in control of his bathroom issues. He had specific times of the day he would go to the bathroom to relieve himself and his clothes stayed clean. He would be away from school for the summer and return in diapers.

I do but it was uncommon for a kid to have an accident.

But there seems to be a trend in parents thinking that the kids will potty train themselves "when they are ready".

It is stupid but what can you do.

The kid's school already has this rule in place and, since they are not government funded, it is not an issue.

When I was in 2nd grade, coming back from the Principal’s office going to class I came across a 1st grade kid who was crying loudly. The kid had just walked himself out of the boys room, pants around his ankles... he crapped himself. He didn’t know what to do - but I guess he knew enough not to pull his pants back up. But not skilled to clean himself and probably didn’t have a change of clothes anyway. He just stood there, crying loudly, half naked, covered in excrement.

I guess he was “potty trained”, but just didn’t make it to the pot in time. I did summon an adult to help and eventually his mother came. I guess the point is - accidents will sometimes happen. Even grown men will not make it in time. Though usually alcohol is involved in that.

Not BY 2. But they start around 2 and will hopefully be “day trained” by 3. Bed-wetting should resolve by around 4. Got the 30 month old grandson going to the potty at every diaper change. Flushing. Washing hands. But he’s not fully capable of understanding how the plumbing routine totally needs to go yet.

In the 1960s average age of training clean and dry was 16 months.

Cloth diapers were wet cold and bulky and accelerated training. I used cloth on all 4 of my kids.

It can be really hard for a parent. One of my four knew exactly what to do. But she’d fight and run off and hide and we’d try continuously day after day. We’d gotten to kindergarten prescreening at about 4 1/2 where we were close to having to hold her back over it. But she got it done in time.

I guess my point is that it isn’t automatically lazy or negligent parents. Every kid is different and some take longer.

That said, they absolutely SHOULD be held back if not potty trained by KG. It’s not the end of the world.

As it should be. And they should know their name and address. You’d be surprised how many 5 year olds do not know their full name

I gave my 2 year old daughter some rumba panties, and told her she could wear them as long as she didn’t wet her oants. She never had another accident. (She’s always been an overachiever).

Not necessarily due to immigration. Mothers in other countries don’t the time to tolerate something like not being potty-trained at 5 years of age. This is most likely daycare children, where the parents don’t spend any time with the kids raising them, because there is just enough time to feed them supper and send them to bed.

We were still working on “come here” at that age.

Average age today is 2 1/2 to 3 with a 6 month learning period.

I was in cloth in the early 70s. I’ll have to ask my mom. I know she’s got it in a book somewhere.

When my oldest was about 13 months I took her in the bathroom and showed her the how of things.

I swear a look of relief crossed her face. I showed her some cotton training pants and she wore them for a few months then transitioned to ruffle legged carters.

what country did they migrate in from?

I suspect their families have lived in America for generations.

“A 4 or 5 year old is NOT a toddler.”

Yes and no.

While we consider a toddler to be between the ages of 1 to 3 it also is based on physical and cognitive development. Some children don’t hit that milestone as fast as others.

“That said, it may be the kids have learned that they either get sent hoe or get attention by having *accidents*. In a church I attended many years ago, there was one little girl who everyone knew was potty trained but hated nursery and would not stay in it. She learned very quickly that if she had an *accident, mom would come and take her out.”

The way I look at it the child was with Mommy and that is where she needed to be and not in a Nursery with strangers. Perhaps Mommy made her sit and behave like a little lady?
