Is there anything more disconcerting than being asked to sign a waiver before tucking into a hamburger?

An American visitor to Toronto shocked hundreds of Reddit users last week by sharing that he was asked to sign a waiver when he ordered a medium-cooked hamburger at a Hilton hotel restaurant.

“She brought it and it looked great! When I had my first bite she brought me a release form and said we always make our burgers well done, but since you wanted it medium … you should sign this.”

The poster said that upon the special “medium” request, the waiter informed the man that the only burger option was well done and requested them to sign the form.

The form stated it would clear the hotel restaurant against any claims for damages related to any foodborne illnesses arising from the medium-cooked burger.

I’m actually shocked there’s an American ‘touring’ (e.g., tourist) Canada.

Wendys does not cook well done unless you ask. Every time I eat there (been a lot time) I get diarrhea. So don’t eat there anymore.

Before I emmigrated to FL, I raised Scottish Highlands. Averaged 3 halves per year, the rest sold. Never worried about the ground beef - it was proocessed by a MN butcher even though cattle ate WI grass.

Spolied, I was! Ran out once, got ca 10 lbs Cub Foods ground.
You know how it is. Stuffed peppers? Grab a pinch and eat it raw. Meat loaf - likewsie. Got sick. Took sample into my lab at Uof MN Lab Medicine & Pathology - result not surprising.

Years later in FL. Hole in the wall burger joint that I still won’t name (keep y’all Yankees out) asked me to sign a release for my usual ‘bloody rare’ burger.

Only solution? Grind the lawyers up and use them in less-critical presentations - tacos, ersatz chilli etc.

Chronic wasting disease

One day, we'll get sick from eating infected deer meat.

An irony about prion diseases is that our bodies continually make and destroy prions of many different kinds. Only in rare instances are prions created that are both defective and invulnerable.

Their “reproduction” of sorts is like other proteins, except they are able to persuade normal proteins kind of like them to also go active using the same defective process. It is so close to the natural process it is very hard to correct or fight.
