Dramatic footage has captured huge waves crashing into a United States military building in the Marshall Islands on Saturday, January 20.

US Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA) confirmed a significant flooding event on Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands on Saturday night and said they were planning to relocate all Roi residents until services were restored.

Video from @worldmaverick shows the moment a huge wave breaks down a door, washing over people inside the building.

He told Storyful he was enjoying a night at the Outrigger Bar & Grill when “rouge waves” crashed through the building.

“I saw my friends disappear right in front of my eyes. More waves kept coming. Everyone responded to the emergency scenario and thankfully no one was seriously hurt,” he said.

Wow! Who knew that the Army had a garrison on Kwajalein?

How far can they march?

Highest point is 33’ on Kwajalein. No thank you.
Rogue waves happen often enough.

Wow. A news story describing the storm surge event without the term ‘floodwaters’.

Operation Roi Recovery assesses damages to Kwajalein Atoll infrastructure

ROI-NAMUR, Marshall Islands — A series of weather-driven waves Jan. 20, 2024 resulted in significant flooding of the island of Roi-Namur. The island is the second-largest island of the Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

U.S. Army Garrison-Kwajalein Atoll supports the U.S. Space and Missile Defense Command’s Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site. The test site serves as a space and missile defense test range for the Department of Defense.

USAG–KA personnel evacuated 80 of the approximately 120 personnel who call Roi-Namur home. Sixty people remain to assess damage and restore basic services while continuing the water and fuel runs that sustain the island of Enniburr, the island south of Roi-Namur where the Marshallese workforce resides.

“Clearing the runway on Roi-Namur and assessing its safety is our top priority now that we have evacuated personnel not required for the initial response efforts,” said Col. Drew Morgan, USAG–KA garrison commander. “Once the runway is open, we can move people and equipment back and forth to start the recovery process.”

Flooding from the waves damaged much of the unaccompanied personnel housing. The dining facility, Outrigger Bar and Grill, the chapel and the Tradewinds Theater were moderately to severely damaged. The automotive complex remains under water.

“Rouge” waves. Sort of a red tide, then?

That was my old stomping ground. I can’t imagine waves big enough to crash through the island itself, but in large storms the place does flood a few feet to the point it is literally under water.

There was once a storm 250 miles away that gave the ocean side 30 foot swells. We went ocean side and rode 60 foot trough to crest swells to do some amazing fishing. Yet, no waves crashed into and flooded the island. I’ve never heard of this happening before.

The islands are 6 feet above sea level. This is the first I’ve ever heard of waves crashing through the islands. I lived on Roi 88-90.
