Saban calling it quits does not surprise me at all.
I would not be surprised to see Bama try to snatch Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss.

A friend of mine was still working in her 80th year. Her daughter asked her doctor about forcing her to retire and the doctor said bluntly that retiring would kill her.
The family decided that they knew better. They forced her out and she was dead in five months.

Verdi wrote his last opera, Falstaff, when he was 79
Pretty sure Verdi did not have to work in front of 100,000 people every Saturday and have 1/2 million alumni looking over his shoulder.

You don’t need an excuse for not retiring if you love the work you are doing. Verdi wrote his last opera, Falstaff, when he was 79, and it was a great success.
Verdi could set his own hours. football headcoach at that level is extremely demanding. Dick Vermeil didn’t even recognize his own son. College is even worse than the pros with constant recruitment, N-I-L and the transfer portal.

The social aspect?

A football coach needs to work long days and work hard. The most successful have been known to sleep 4-6 hours at night. Stay all night in the office, and put that kind of effort into things for about 9 months a year. The rest of the time is scouting, and perusing other players rosters. It is A YOUNG MANS GAME, being a Coach.

Pete Carrol, Nick Saban and Bill Belicheck should all call it a day and move to some place warm.

It was her life in her later years.
She started it in her fifties when her children were grown as a little hobby. Something to fill her time. It became her passion. Yes, she still was involved in church and with her grandchildren when they were around but this was something she had built from nothing. Gave her a reason to get up in the morning. When she no longer had that, why bother? Her husband had passed, her mother had passed and all her children lived out of state.
Can I say that was what killed her? Nah. But it did not help matters.
Leave the people who want to work alone to work.
Not all of us want to go fishing every day.

haha. Saban saw the writing on the wall. This year, for example, Texas beat Bama, OU beat Texas. He would never run the SEC table again. May as well retire when #4 is the best you got to look forward to.

So, 3 or 4 loss seasons will be the norm. I don’t think fans will like that.
