The drug hydroxychloroquine was prescribed off-label during the pandemic and touted in particular by a prominent French researcher.
The antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine may have induced nearly 17,000 deaths in six countries during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This molecule was presented during the pandemic as a miracle cure by a minority of health professionals, among them the French microbiologist Didier Raoult.
The scientist’s belief that the drug was a cure for COVID-19 was soon echoed by some policymakers. French President Emmanuel Macron notably visited his facility and US President Donald Trump recommended the drug in 2020, stating that he had already taken it.
Avoiding COVID was about more than just keeping 2 metres apart, study finds The use of the drug sparked controversy as many health specialists noted the lack of research or scientific evidence of its effectiveness against COVID-19.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorisation of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in March 2020 but revoked it in June.
The drug was found in particular to cause severe side effects such as heart rhythm abnormalities.
Nearly 17,000 deaths induced by hydroxychloroquine A new study published in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy now estimates the fallout from the drug’s off-label use.
Researchers led by Jean-Christophe Lega, a Professor of Therapeutics in the Lyon, France hospital system, investigated studies conducted in France, the United States, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Turkey from March 2020 until July 2020.
"HCQ use was associated with an 11 per cent increase in the mortality rate in a meta-analysis of randomised trials," the study noted, citing a meta-analysis published in 2021 in Nature which the researchers used to calculate the number of deaths induced by the drug.
'It’s not gone. It’s changing. It’s killing': The COVID variants the WHO is watching closely The estimated number of deaths in European countries was roughly 240 in Belgium, 199 in France, 1,822 in Italy, and 1,895 in Spain.
"What we need to bear in mind is that this is a rough estimate, in the sense that it only concerns a few countries over a short period, and that the total number of deaths is probably much higher," Lega told French broadcaster France 3.
The results should be taken with caution as it is a statistical analysis. One limitation of the study was that in France, Turkey, and Belgium, in particular, data concerning exposure to the drug was scarce.
Yet the researchers say: "This result argues in favour of tightly regulating access to off-label prescriptions during future pandemics".
Vs how many saved?
Any treatment is going to have a number of deaths associated with it because not everybody will be compatible with that treatment.
I wonder which pharmaceutical company financed this study?
See, we can play that game too.
UTTER BS!!! The propaganda lately is thick!!!
“Yet the researchers say: “This result argues in favour of tightly regulating access to off-label prescriptions during future pandemics”.
That figures. That’s the whole purpose of this article.
Unexpected gain of function.
I do not believe this article. HCQ has been administered literally billions of times in the tropics for prevention of malaria. If this study were true we would have had millions of deaths in the tropics and a valid study on this would have been published. I took the drug when I worked in Nigeria. They are gaslighting us.
cpdiii retired clinical pharmacist
Show us PROOF! More likely there were 17,000 casualties among those to whom it was administered too late to help. It's been used for many decades to treat malaria without killing people.
That’s a lot of fish-tank cleaner!
Same drug that's been on the WHO's List of Essential Medicines for years and is sold over the counter in countries with prevalent malaria.
“HCQ use was associated with an 11 per cent increase in the mortality rate in a meta-analysis of randomised trials,” the study noted, citing a meta-analysis published in 2021 in Nature which the researchers used to calculate the number of deaths induced by the drug.

As a student of pharmacology I woul like to see it explained to me tge particular and exact mechanism in the HCQ tgat causes cardiac arrhythmia
They give amiodarome for instance to patients with arrhythmias not because a lot of Europeans have a reduction in arrhythmias after using amiodarone but because there is a particular mechanism in the substance that reduces arrhythmias of a particular type
For instance:
“ It blocks potassium currents that cause repolarization of the heart muscle during the third phase of the cardiac action potential. As a result amiodarone increases the duration of the action potential as well as the effective refractory period for cardiac cells (myocytes).”
You show me that statement in relation to the opposite effect from HCQ and I will read on
Until then this is just propaganda
This is a bogus conclusion, especially since the doses given trials that went bad were not what was recommended.
I can pick bad studies all day long for commonly used drug therapies, and claim them the truth, too.
TOTAL BULL SHIT!
“You vill believe do you understand!”
What a gigantic crock of bovine feces.
The antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, used in combination with zinc and azithromycin, was highly effective, but not necessarily so when used in isolation. Also, in many instances, the protocol was used far too late in the course of the disease, and was essentially useless after the cytokine storm has overtaken the immune system, causing massive organ failure.
Ventilators, touted early on as a heroic form of intervention, proved to be an accelerant is used too late as well.
My wife has been taking HCQ for decades for an autoimmune disease. During COVID, our pharmacy cut her off. We had to get this vital drug from alternative sources for a while.
I have the feeling that I am being BS’ed and gaslighted.
Now. these vile lying medical ‘experts’ have the audacity to blame one of the safest, most used therapudic drugs in history for causing Covid deaths. They have no shame.
