A black swan event is a rare and highly impactful occurrence that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation and has potentially severe consequences. The term is based on an ancient saying that presumed black swans did not exist until they were discovered in Australia in 1697.

The term was popularized by former Wall Street trader Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who wrote about the concept in his 2001 book Fooled by Randomness.

Black swan events are characterized by their extreme rarity, severe impact, and widespread insistence that they were obvious in hindsight. They can be classified as positive or negative black swan events and can have profound influences on history and shape the course of events.
