Swiss city considers legalizing cocaine for recreational use in pilot program: ‘War on drugs has failed’
New York Post ^ | Dec. 20, 2023 | Allie Griffin

The capital of Switzerland is considering launching a pilot program to test the legal sale of cocaine for recreational use in a never-before-done attempt to make the country’s rampant use of the drug safer.

Bern’s parliament supports the pilot program but the legislation will still need to overcome opposition from the city and requires a change of federal law to become a reality.

The proposal comes as more and more countries and US states are changing their approach to the so-called “war on drugs” with policies including decriminalization and legal recreational use of marijuana. Supporters argue that legalization allows for greater control over the market and safer usage if people use the drugs illegally anyway.

Yes, the war on drugs has failed. However, legalizing something means it will be openly marketed with slick, psychologically provocative advertisements. It will turn into a new, open, legal industry and industry survives by growing. Very quickly the new industry will lobby for the same types of perks other industries get.

I remember when abortions were legalized. They were supposed to be safe and “rare.” Now they are advertised. How does that make them rare?

There was a “war on cancer” at the same time. We lost that war too. Should we just give up and accept cancer?

The war failed as it wasn’t waged correctly.

Hot mix them with some Fentanyl why don’t they? That’s what they’re headed for.

As the dangerous stuff gets more and more dangerous, previous stuff becomes more accepted.

Kid get in trouble 1970’s 80’s
At least it was just beer
At least it was only a little weed

Now in the Fentanyl era
At least it was only crack, meth, oxy...

The bar keeps moving the wrong way

They only need to look to Oregon to see how it will end. A pity they cannot learn from others.

If you can’t keep drugs out of maximum security prisons, literal police states, how can you possibly expect to do so in a ‘free’ society?

I came of age during Nancy Reagan and Just Say No. Never used anything that wasn’t prescribed to me by a doctor...and still haven’t.

But then I grew up, seeing that the “War On Drugs”, while well intentioned, was and is unwinnable. It is because you simply cannot control what the general population chooses to do to itself at the individual level. No government will ever have that kind of power. At least none that we would want to live under.

The war on violence has failed. Let’s legalize murder.

Until societies deal with the underlying social issues blaming guns, drugs, violent video games, gambling is so much simpler.

Govt wars on poverty, illiteracy, drugs and most recently hate have done nothing but create more of each-institutionalizing and monetizing misery.

There are no easy answers or solutions but as long as they keep blaming the wrong things, they’re going to get the wrong answers.

You can’t have a governmental “war on drugs” at the same time the government is supporting the trafficking of drugs.

Well, it'll keep those pilots awake while they fly the planes so it's probably a good idea.

;-)

The war on common sense was lost long ago-

let’s pretend prohibition was not an epic failure

and while we’re at it-let’s pretend legalization is somehow an answer!

Let’s not stop warring against common sense just because it failed.

The war on drugs has failed because there is no meaningful punishment, except in the Far East. There is no drug problem in those countries now.

If they want to experience “failed,” just legalize dope. Then all of society can crumble, not just the dopers.

“how can you possibly expect to do so in a ‘free’ society?”

Tough penalties for pushers. Like death.
