A trio of companies, including Ford, have iced plans for a large electric vehicle plant in Turkey, citing cooling demand.
The news (also involving LG Energy Solution and Koç Holding) is a blow to innovation and investment momentum happening among some of the largest automakers around the world.
Why is it important?
Widespread EV use is a key part of reducing planet-warming air pollution. With no tailpipe emissions, EVs produce less dirty air during the vehicle’s lifetime than gas-powered vehicles, even when considering pollution generated from battery manufacturing, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The typical gas-powered passenger vehicle makes more than five tons of foul air each year with heat-trapping gas, per the EPA.
EV innovations and partnerships from companies of all sizes are regularly announced. But, another big-time commitment from a high-profile brand like Ford would be a boon for EV momentum.
For its part, Koç will “evaluate potential battery cell investments in the future in line with the dynamics of the electric vehicle market,” the company told Electrek.
What should I do? It’s important to be a savvy shopper the next time you visit an auto dealer. Prices are dropping, even for big brands like Tesla, as the market fluctuates.
Newer models are entering the scene and providing more competition, which is a good thing for buyers.
Keep an eye out for the latest government tax breaks and other programs made to incentivize EV adoption. Depending on what’s being offered, leasing may be a better option.
As for Ford and Koç, the businesses “will remain committed to support electric vehicle production” through already operational plants, per a Koç statement published by Electrek.

Save the flippin’ planet and all that jazz.
Who would put any business in Turkey? People are friggen stupid.
Mz. Malarkey would be proud. From what I gather, EVs eat tires which need to be replaced every year. Must be the non-polluting kind.
By the time they get the plant built and start manufacturing the battery, it will be outdated by more advanced tech.
Because Karl Marx was right on this one point. The businessman is so interested in money that he will sell you the rope that will be used to hang him.
I guess they figured they could pollute Turkey with nobody caring, since some jihadi would eventually blow it up.
EV’s are classic “NIMBY”.
They may not have a tailpipe, but the power plant that generates the electricity to charge them almost certainly does (>75% of U.S. electricity comes from gas, oil, or coal).
Add to that the energy efficiency lost in getting the power to the car (think third law of thermodynamics) and it gets even less attractive from a CO2 perspective.
Anyway, the infrastructure cost is in the trillions. We’re already bankrupt and we can’t even patch the roads!
The Average EV must travel 75K miles before they work off the huge carbon footprint created by manufacturing them (vs. an ICE vehicle). If they have the Extended Range Option Batteries, it may never hit breakeven before the batteries must be replaced.
Stick with the People Mover and call it a day.
But in Canada, the national village idiot, Justin Trudeau. is pressing Northfolt ( a Volkswagon Joint Venture Corp’n) to go ahead building one of these ridiculus battery plants in Quebec, to keep his “parlez vous” colleagues happy with kick back..
“EV battery giant Northvolt to build multibillion-dollar plant in Quebec”(Sept. 23 , 2023)

Trudeau is setting it up that all farm equipment must be electric by 2027 or farmers will pay a punative carbon tax, decreasing food supply, increasing food prices , thereby starving Canadians because many farmers will go out of business.
At the same time the Village Idiot is using federal environmental law to suppress Alberta’s oil production. This causes huge hardship to Albertan job seekers.
This is the kind of crap Canada has to tolerate from these Klaus Schwab climate change idiots.
TRUCK FRUDEAU !
Prices are dropping, even for big brands like Tesla, as the market begins to collapse.
We're past the incentive phase and moving into the forcing phase.
Pritzger just shoved a $2B Chinese EV battery plant down the throats of Illinoisans.
This stinks in a hundred ways.
Kasmer and likely most of MSN are completely ignorant of EV ‘pollution’. Right now, and likely for many decades into the future, EVs spew air pollution from coal fired electricity generation. There is simply no feasible technology on the horizon that will stop this.
By the time they get the plant built, the left will change their minds on what’s saving the planet and what’s killing the planet and may try to rid folks of the EV they’re currently forcing on us. Just like they’ve done with natural gas. Just like they’ve done with nuclear power.
A blow to the ongoing and polluting "green" scam which cannot succeed without corporate welfare.
Because labor is cheap, much closer to the raw materials, and while you are correct good skilled labor is hard to find it is not impossible and still cheap.
From the article: “EVs produce less dirty air during the vehicle’s lifetime than gas-powered vehicles,”
I suppose that’s a fact. But where does the electricity come from that recharges those fire hazard batteries? Lefties are typically to narrow minded to even remotely think of that.
