I suspect she did like him. But after her daughter died, she realized she lost a daughter, and the groom was going to get all her money after only a few hours of marriage.

He won the lotto not having to deal with the drama that would be brought upon him between his wife and MIL.

That’s to be expected, but just reading what his vindictive former MIL is doing to him throughout all this should give him some sort of indication that he was in for a rocky road with her meddling ways.
Contentious in-laws always cause marital strains.
One of my friends had a tragedy happen to him with his first wife dying unexpectedly a few years back. They had 3 children together.
The incessant demands from his former in-laws caused him to move 150 miles further away from them and pretty much cease that relationship.

Exactly, we seem to be in club with 2 members who see it from this prospective. Everybody is slamming her mother but there is another way to look at it.

The NY Post article explains:
The bride was killed in the accident on April 28. Three days later, on May 1, while the groom was recovering in the hospital, his aunt and uncle brought the signed marriage license and certificate to a probate court and filled out forms. On one form, the aunt wrote that the bride and groom lived together after the marriage (which is a lie because the bride died at her wedding).
