Singer-songwriter John Mellencamp has detailed the startling surgical procedure that saved his life as an infant.
Mellencamp, who was born with spina bifida – a condition where the spine and the membranes around the spinal cord are not properly connected, leaving the spinal cord exposed – underwent the pioneering operation not long after he was born in 1951.
"I had my head cut off when I was six weeks old," Mellencamp tells Esquire. "There were three other kids who had that same operation that day. The other kids died, and I lived. One girl made it for a while, and I used to see her at basketball games. She was paralysed from the neck down. She died when she was about, I don’t know, thirteen."

Epiphone makes Les Paul’s under license. I have a Korean made one. Every bit as good as Gibson’s overpriced models.
I just like the Ibanez Wizard necks better. Plus they don’t have the staying in tune issues that Les Pauls have.
I have an Ibanez acoustic; a very nice guitar for its modest (relatively speaking) price.
That explains why his head is stuck up his ass.
Yep, moderately priced Alvarez Yairi for me. Works fine for my limited play time.
I notice it has a non-Fender headstock. Probably a custom build of some kind.
I’ve been saving for a Telecaster. I’ve got me a Strat but I’d love to have a Tele.
“Yep, moderately priced Alvarez Yairi for me.”
Nice sound.
Yea, could be.
I remember Les Paul & Mary Ford together. Loved their music.
Underrated movie.
He’s still dead from the neck up.
He doesn’t give a crap about family farmers.
It is a custom guitar by ‘48th Street Custom Guitars” modeling a ‘52 Telecaster body and pickgaurd. You can tell by the headstock it’s not a Fender (unless they cut the headstock off and replaced it. ) /s . I happen to know it’s a 48th Street guitar .
figured it was custom, they have the money to get what they want. The 50’s and 60’s off the shelf models were quite good as well.
Well, his neck does look strange in that photo.
Well that explains a lot. Has this lefty signed up to play the DNC Convention yet?
It hurt so good cause sometimes love don’t feel like it should.
This must be why I call him “MellonHead”
Mellencamp’s drummer, Dane Clark, has been a friend of mine for decades. He’s filled-in a couple of times when our own drummer couldn’t play a gig for whatever reason.
