Now that we’re going to 12 team playoff next year, it’s a moot point.
Your Fellow FReeper Gator fan agrees totally.
Imagine if the top four in MLB, or NFL, or NHL, or NBA were chosen by a committee the day after the end of the season. It's like when Presidents were chosen in back rooms by authoritarians--oh, wait a minute...
This is an artifact of Division I football never having a proper playoff, as the NCAA has never sanctioned one.
Prior to the CFP and BCS, the “national champion” was essentially determined by *polls*.
LOL. Yep, Hill Billy Napier’s a genius. Waiting to hear he’s been canned. I was sorta busy the last few days and haven’t caught up on the latest regarding him. Any news?
They won by 3 points. That’s not handily.
You are probably right.
Personally, I think the committee over-ranked FSU going in to this week. If they had been #5 instead of #4, everyone would’ve accepted them being out today.
If an undefeated Power 5 team is not going to be competing against other Power 5 undefeated teams for a National Championship, WHAT IS THE POINT OF A PLAYOFF?!
This is embarrassing, and everyone in the NCAA associated with this whole fiasco should be ashamed and embarrassed.
🍊 Orange Bowl Announced:
FSU v. Georgia
Should be a good game.
When Dabo ruled the ACC he always got in. However, ESecPN could not be left out of the cash flow. The TV and Cable Conference Network deals will put the majority into the post season shoot out next year going forward.
In a sane world where the integrity of the game really mattered after a team has been convicted, but “fully convicted” Michigan would not be in. The B1G/B16 has a media legend ensuring maxium profits to that conference at the helm.
Conference championships only matter... when they don’t.
On another note, had the committee left Cheatigan out, would have FSU got in? Or would have they bypassed a 11-1 Ohio State.
Next year after the off season adjustments, we shall see what kind of product Ichigan puts out. They are the most senior team in college football with 44 seniors, and a half dozen juniors leaving. They have said they needed 28 portal kids.
You seem to view this in a way similar to me.
FSU joined the ACC instead of the SEC so that they could be on top of the conference in football. The ACC was really a powerful basketball conference. This is FSU getting their just desserts.
They can thank a former coach for steering them into the ACC and consequently what happened this year. They had a strength of schedule ranked 55th in the country.
If I hear one more mouth-breather talk about an “eye test” it’ll be too soon. You know what other sport has an “eye test”, Figure Skating, a sport about as equally corrupt as college football. I’ll be glad when they get to the 12 team playoff. It should have been 16. But keep cheering for those anti-American, ultra-woke, perverted sex worshiping institutions.
They had to have an SEC team. Putting Alabama in over Texas did not make sense to them so FSU was the sacrificial lamb. But hey they were gifted the 1993 championship.
Other than losing recruits right and left and players leaving UF for the Portal, nothing.
Thank You!
Yeah, barely beating a team who got slaughtered by New Mexico State the week before is a real good look. /s
Your memory is shorter than Biden’s. Last year Bama had 2 losses and didn’t get in. Bama ended the season routing the Big 12 champ Kansas State…the same KSU that beat TCU in the Big 12 Championship game. The same TCU that got blown up, blown out and blown apart by Georgia so maybe Bama did deserve to get in last year, even with 2 losses by a total of 4 points.
In their current offensive condition I don’t think half ass U could score 100 points in 6 games.
I think the transfer portal and NIL make it very challenging for any head coach, even of higher caliber teams, to become and remain a competitive team. It’s got to be a tough job, especially in some places, like Gainesville, College Station, or Columbus. Heads on chopping blocks unless you’re a winner all the time. Very little mercy shown.
So much money involved. It has taken away a lot of the fun of watching sports. Money ruins everything.
The SEC’s fortunes are tied at the hip with ESecPN.
Unfortunately, you NOW have a nich regional product.
The Big boys NOW have the NYC/NJ, Maryland/Wash DC/Balitmorel, LA/Kalifornia, Seattle, Chicago, Columbus, Indy, and NIKE, OR as honorable mention.
This is a coast-to-coast Mega Media Marketing bemoth that will draw a TV and Cable revenue stream that dewarf’s the SEC.
A funny thing happened on the way to 16 team conferences and that was the B1G/B16 (see how that looks the same with 20-20 hindsight;), but I digress. The B1G channel broke this conference off the ESPN bandwagon, and for the past two years the B1G Cable Programming has almost matched the whole ESPN revenue stream. Then you have the B1G conference TV packages that will pull more air time from 12 EST to 12 PST or about 15 hours a day - as the season conference rankings heat up in the B1G fans in DC or NY will be tunning in to Seattle or LA. I imagine NIKE can get a good commercial deal with the home conference.
When USC or Washington is playing in Ann Arbor or at Rutgers at 12 EST they will watching and when Ohio State is playing a 8-9 PM EST game in Kalifornia or Eugune, Columbus will be watching til midnight. The SEC will have gone dark 2-4 hours earlier, but even if the SEC starts playing 9 PM games, the Media Markets are not going to compete for commercial revenue payouts. The Big Boy Network is going to get rich.
Bottom line is the SEC is an 11-hour air time conference and the B1G is 15 hours - those commercials are going to pull in a lot of Cash.
When the B1G broke with ESPN that newtork promoted the SEC over the the B1G. It made a big difference for about 4-5 years and then the B1G revenue stream began to exceed that of the SEC/ESPN deals.
There are two implications of the SEC Cable tied to ESPN is already showing up in the per team payouts as the B1G TV and separate Cable B1G Network is showing a few million a year advantage - before the Left coast is added.
That second implication is that a National Conferance with greater viewership than a less profitable regional conference will get fewer post season plum invites, so maybe in ten years it will even out in fairness as less deserving B1G teams garnering more attention will bump a Georgia, Alburn, Bama when they give out the 12 invitations to the play offs;)
FOLLOW THE MONEY.
Shouldn’t matter. They earned it over the course of the season. And if Travis was healthy, they’d easily be in.
