The Nightmare in Grapevine is upon us.
What is often a formality — making four obvious choices for the four-team College Football Playoff — is anything but for the committee this year.
The 13-member group, huddled in a hotel in Grapevine, Texas, will have to make the most consequential and controversial decision in its 10-year existence — and in the final season before the playoff expands to 12 teams. Their decision will be revealed at noon Sunday on ESPN.
Big Ten champion Michigan (13-0) and Pac-12 champion Washington (13-0) are assumed to be safely in. They’ll almost assuredly be the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively.
After that, there are three teams for two spots and there is no obvious answer.

FSU definitely has the weakest schedule

Toughest game was their first game of the year vs 9-3 LSU. Next was probably Duke.
Are you talking about OSU, the team that beat TU? Oklahoma State was nowhere in the rankings (outside of the top ten) in their lose.
The Ohio State lost to the #3 team. Their loss was to a higher-ranking team. None of the other teams can claim that status.
Not sure what the committee will decide. It's as tough a problem as we've seen in this BCS era.
Has a #4 team ever won the playoff? I don’t think so. So imho, whomever gets squeezed out of the 4th spot shouldn’t be too upset. ...unless the #4 wins the playoff :)
That said, we’re talking about fans here - so rationality goes out the window.
I’m in Michigan, so I’m waiting for somebody to claim “cheating” and for them to be tossed....probably from OSU fans :)
So is Liberty University..just sayin’ if that is your criteria.
I agree. I was rooting for chaos yesterday, and chaos is what we got.
Taking into consideration all of the one-loss teams, who lost to the highest-ranking team?
LOL. Boomer Sooner, eh?
Because Wash deserves two spots?
Delusional OSU fan base nonsense. You got beat without the head coach on the sideline for a fake scandal that OSU force fed to the media. Dumbest scandal ever. Probably spotted OSU ten points with that, and you still got beat by a rookie assistant. Go whine elsewhere.
Brock Glenn did as was he supposed to do, not lose the game. Not much yards but NO TURNOVERS!!! Strangling defense did the rest!
ESPN is an SEC toadie, they think they’re entitled to a spot in CFP just because they exist. Alabama needed a miracle to beat 6-6 Auburn. Georgia couldn’t win their conference. Alabama lost to Texas at home. To say Bama or Georgia would beat FSU is nothing but pure speculation. The SEC should have the year off! Sadly, SEC politics may prevail but without the politics here’s the top four.
Michigan
Washington
FSU
Texas
Yeah, how dare FSU go undefeated when everyone else lost a game or two.
Gotta keep all the undefeated bigs in there. Very difficult to go undefeated. Then Texas beat Alabama, Alabama beat Georgia. Texas goes in.
Committee shouldn’t consider historical resumes.
As far as FSU is concerned, they won the conference championship without their starting quarterback..says alot for the team.
FSU should be in it.
Conclusion IMHO...
MICH.
WASH.
FSU
TEXAS.
I think next year it’s 12 teams for the playoff...so we’ll be arguing over the number 9, 10, 11, 12 teams. Then we’ll argue that the number 10 team really shoulda’ been seeded number 8....Then we’ll say that whoever wins the championship won because of a bad referee call..
sarc.follows:....and then in 5 years most of us will forgot who won, cause our sjw’s and snowflakes will be conscripted into the army to fight in Ukraine....sarc/off
No way GA is kept out by one close loss after 29 straight, and all Bama did was make Texas look like it belonged. Bama received the same 'grace' in their one-loss '11, '12, '15, '17 championship seasons, and so the Committee won't extend the same 'grace' to the current Champion team?
Too bad they can't have a play in game between Bama and Texas.
The NCAA got themselves into this when they went to this format and decided that someone had to be the national champion. The old adage “on any given day” applies to sports like college football. And who owns the crystal ball tht can look at records and determine a certain team is better than another one. Variables like injuries, weather, location based upon travel, and player availability are just a few of the major elements that drive the capacity of a team. And then there’s dumb luck at just the right time.
I saw this failure in their thinking start when they took the Rose Bowl away from the PAC 12 and now ultimately the PAC 12. This whole thing can be summed up with a little five letter word...money. And I’ll even give you a prediction:
By allowing the vacating of the PAC 12 to create games on the east coast, they are going to lose their shirts. A lot of people would drive south to see USC versus CAL but they won’t drive to Pennsylvania. And just like trying to sell out the superbowl, the locals won’t be that interested in a west coast team they have been told are substandard for years. It might sell the first year, maybe two. But it’ll die after that when the novelty is gone. I wonder what conferences they are going to erase then. Or do they start with bowl games that are a dime a dozen now?

2014 Ohio State Buckeyes football team
Ohio State was selected to participate in the inaugural College Football Playoff, as the fourth-ranked team, and faced top-ranked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl
No historical resumes. Bama barely beat Auburn..barely beat Georgia .lost to Texas. Bama beat the powerhouses of Chattanooga, and Middle Tennessee...Struggled against Auburn, Arkansas and Texas A&M...if you want to look at current resumes..This year they don’t have the right, right stuff..Probably should be #5 or #6. Would definitely be in an 12 team playoff, though.
Kentucky beat Louisville
Missouri walked off Kansas State with a 61 yard field goal
Ole Miss beat Tulane
Miss State beat Arizona
That's it. That is a candy ass resume for an entire conference.
Let's see what happened the other way....
FSU blew out LSU
Texas beat Bama by double digits
Utah blew out Florida
Bob Stoops was asked why he was so successful recruiting in Texas. He replied, “I tell the recruits, ‘You can stay in Texas and play for a state championship. Or you can come to Oklahoma and play for for a National Championship.’”
