Russia actually made it into Avdiivka? This is my first hearing about it. A month ago, the suggestion that Russians could ever enter that city was laughed at here.

Remember all the comments that Bakhmut would be a decisive Russian victory that would open up Russia's advance into eastern Ukraine? How did that go? It didn't. After taking Bakhmut Russia did not advance further. They reason is they can't. They don't have the logistics to attack beyond easy targets.

Russia is trying to advance where they can concentrate forces to attack, regardless of the value of the land. Putin wants political victories to sell to the Russians who are the base of his power in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Avdiivka is even worse for Russia than Bakhmut. Since 2014 Ukraine built it into a fortress, not just a front line. Russia has had its largest losses to date trying to take it, up to a battalion a week. Even if they succeeded, they gain nothing for it.
