Seniors aging in place causes surge in spare bedrooms: Report

Further, 17% of all owned homes are occupied by single or married seniors with two or more spare bedrooms.

“The surge of spare bedrooms speaks to a mismatch in the housing market, at a time when so many feel there are too few options available,” Salviati said.

Seniors aging in place are keeping a significant share of single-family homes unavailable to younger generations, according to Salviati. It’s why, in part, it’s hard for millennials to break into homeownership.

America’s “greatest generation” were the World War 2 parents of today’s aging generation. The greatest generation came of age at a time when America badly needed qualified experts to expand its war effort.

The World War 1 generation mentored the greatest generation into these positions. The economy expanded accordingly. Conversely the greatest generation mentored no one. The default expectation was to turn the World War 2’s expansion into contraction. And that’s exactly what it produced.

My wife and I (not seniors yet and still working) have a 1 BR, 1 guest room, 1 office, and 1 man cave with office, tv, workout and hobby room. No room for illegals here.

I don’t care what they tax me on, I just don’t want them thinking they can put strangers in my house. I still remember Doctor Zhivego.

They could increase the capital gains exclusion and make it a function of the time you’ve owned the home.

Most of the cap gains on homes held for decades are really just inflation.

I think the idea is to tax you out of your house. Next will be a law where if you are over 65 you can only live in a one bedroom dwelling. You will have to move out if you have more than one bedroom.

none of which will be offered to people not of our choosing.

At first you get to choose,

they don’t implement this all at once.

Sorry, the man cave would be considered and extra bedroom. Guest rooms would be considered a room you do not need too.

Fortunately I’m old. I’ll be gone before that happens. I really don’t think anything like that will happen outside of the cities, too many guns.

You seem to have confused "wants" vs. "needs".

I'm the oldest of 9, and assure you we didn't live in a 10 bedroom house.

Couples don't "Need" a bedroom for each child. They don't "Need" 2 new cars. They don't "Need" many of the toys, electronics, vacations, that they've deemed essential.

There’s an older couple at our church who moved from their home of over 50 years to a smaller home they are renting from their son-in law.

They are a combination of WWII saving stuff, I might need that and a small amount of hoarding.

My wife offered to help them pack up and do some elimination. They did fairly well filling a couple small dumpsters. They’ve been in the new place for a bout a year and she still goes over two days a week and helps them consolidate, donate and organize. It’s more because they’ve become friends right now.

Their daughter lives nearby but she’s a serious minimalist and her and her mom are polar opposites. She can’t help.

I’m not allowed either. I’m way too sarcastic. This couple has several out of state grandchildren who only visit once a year or so, so of course, she requires a full mattress for each of them. None mattresses stacked up fill an entire room. I’m either air mattresses or a nearby hotel. Wanna visit, plan to be uncomfortable.

They have a couple hundred puzzles that she plans to do someday. At 80 something, their ain’t too many somedays left. Ditch the puzzles.

Guaranteed that when they die, her daughter and son-in-law are going to throw out 90% of their stuff, maybe more.

If the left is so concerned about those spare bedrooms, I suggest that we experiment first with democrats offering their extra bedrooms to illegal aliens or other homeless people. Obama, Biden, Warren, and Sanders can go first. We can return to the issue in a year or so to see how it has worked out for them.

They are indoctrinated and they have been given a terrible education by many people totally unqualified to be teaching anything.

It’s why, in part, it’s hard for millennials to break into homeownership.

Blackstone alone has at least 80,000 homes and still buying any home any condition.

And a few other companies doing the same.

I think I’m pretty aware of wants vs. needs. We went for years with just one vehicle, never took a vacation, certainly didn’t head south in the winter (still don’t), and my kids were raised the same way.

Yes, some millenials do feel entitled, they feel they have to start off where their parents ended up. Sadly, many of the parents have not prepared the next generation either emotionally or morally.

My generation did a LOT of spoiling kids. It left them thinking they had a cake-walk. They don’t.

I think it’s the lack of proper teaching, the garbage they’re filled with in schools, and the deliberate out-of-reach real estate that is/was stacked against them.

That’s the biggest crime.

It’s that goal of home ownership that anchors many people, and helps pave the way to a future and some wealth development.

If you lose that dream of home ownership, you would tend to give up on having a family as well, taking you on a very different and aimless path, possibly.

Home ownership isn’t a thing of the past you just have to know where to to look and how stable the market is.
